Adds to Team of Experts to Help Finish the Job
New York–(ENEWSPF)–March 24, 2014. As part of its ongoing multi-million dollar campaign to finish the job and secure the freedom to marry nationwide, Freedom to Marry today announced Kevin Nix as its new communications director. A veteran of the movement, Nix joins Freedom to Marry after years of experience in a series of battles.
“As the primary battleground shifts anew from legislatures to courts, we are placing extra emphasis on driving the message that all of America is ready for the freedom to marry and growing the already solid majority of Americans who are on board,” said Marc Solomon, national campaign director of Freedom to Marry. “Kevin Nix’s communications experience, news judgment, and relentless drive position us well to make the case that now is the time to finish the job.”
As campaign media director for the Human Rights Campaign, Nix played an active role on several marriage campaigns and most recently served as lead communications specialist for the Americans for Workplace Opportunity coalition in its successful efforts to secure Senate passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Nix was a key member of the 2013 project that Freedom to Marry led, along with HRC and litigation partners, to generate positive media coverage in the run-up to the 2013 Supreme Court marriage rulings.
Prior to joining HRC, Nix served as communications director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which led the work to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
“Freedom to Marry has long established itself as the leader on marriage, and I am proud to be joining the team to help get us over the finish line,” said Nix. “Smart and strategic communications are what’s needed to make the case to opinion-leaders across the country, and ultimately the nine justices on the Supreme Court, that all of America is ready for the freedom to marry.”
Among Nix’s responsibilities is to lead a new Freedom to Marry effort, “The Press Room,” to support state and regional campaigns with their media needs. Modeled after the organization’s Digital Action Center—which performs soup-to-nuts digital support for marriage campaigns—Freedom to Marry’s Press Room provides media strategists to help state and regional campaigns frame and drive the marriage conversation in the media. Already this year, Freedom to Marry has deployed leading communications professionals to Michigan to provide media support around the recent marriage trial, as well as to New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oklahoma as the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals prepares to consider crucial marriage cases.
To support the work of The Press Room, Freedom to Marry has also enlisted Mary Breslauer, a veteran of marriage campaigns, to serve as senior communications adviser. Breslauer has played crucial roles in communications efforts for marriage ever since working with Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders and MassEquality to help secure and defend marriage in Massachusetts. She headed the communications team for Washington United for Marriage, the ballot campaign Freedom to Marry helped lead, which secured marriage in that state in 2012. More recently, Breslauer played a key role in the media efforts around the 2013 Supreme Court marriage rulings, and led communications strategy for New Mexico United for Marriage, which successfully defended that state’s marriage ruling from constitutional amendment.
“I worked extremely closely with Mary Breslauer in the earliest days of the marriage fights in Massachusetts,” said Solomon, “and could not be more pleased that she is joining us to help bring the marriage battle nationwide to a successful conclusion. Mary is one of the best in the business at helping frame and drive a winning narrative in the media.”
