IDVA Hosts “Helping Our Hometown Heroes” Veterans Benefits Fair in Des Plaines

DES PLAINES–(ENEWSPF)–May 21, 2010.  The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) hosted Helping Our Hometown Heroes benefits fair for veterans today at the Frisbie Senior Center in Des Plaines to assist veterans with accessing benefits information from federal, state and local agencies and organizations.

Helping Our Hometown Heroes give veterans and their families the assistance they need in one location,” said IDVA Director Dan Grant. “It is a great resource for veterans to learn about and tap into all the benefits they have earned and are entitled to receive. I urge all veterans, their families, friends, and members of the community to support these events.”

Friday’s event, which was free and open to the public, was held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Highway, Des Plaines.  At least a dozen federal, state and local agencies and organizations participated, including the U.S. Social Security Administration, Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Illinois Housing Development Authority, Senior Helpers, Alexian Brothers, Fifth Third Bank and Oakton Community College, among others.

The event was the first in a series of six benefits fairs being held throughout Cook County through August 6th sponsored by IDVA and the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA). For more information, please visit www.veterans.illinois.gov.
