South Suburban Family Shelter Continues Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

Homewood, IL–(ENEWSPF)– South Suburban Family Shelter is seeking cell phone donations and new cell phone collection sites for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. These services include:

  • 24-Hour Hotline
  • Medical Advocacy
  • Emergency Shelter
  • Court Advocacy
  • Counseling for victims and their children
  • Prevention program
  • Abuser Intervention program
  • Professional Trainings

All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish.

“Donating a used, unwanted cell phone allows community members to donate to a good cause without reaching into their wallets”, states Vicki Meilach, community outreach coordinator. “With the hundreds of thousands of used cell phones sitting idly in our community, the fundraising potential is limitless. We work with a company that specializes in the collection and responsible recycling of used cellular phones. Approximately 60% of recycled cell phones have resale value as refurbished phones. Through the reuse program, phones are distributed to wireless markets worldwide in need of affordable communication. The reuse of electronics is applauded by many environmentalists as an essential step in the electronics recycling process. Approximately 40% of recycled cell phones do not have resale value, and are processed through environmentally responsible refining programs. These phones are shredded and smelted at a copper refinery, and various metals are reclaimed back to their natural state, which is an essential step in the replenishment of our natural resources”.

Some cell phone collection sites include:

SSFS Administrative office: 18139 Harwood, Homewood
Bergsteins NY Deli- 200 Dixie Hwy., Chicago Heights
