Spend an Afternoon with Friends of Thorn Creek Featuring Will County Geologic Mapping Project on Nov. 8

Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—October 30, 2015. Old friends and new will join other nature lovers for Friends of Thorn Creek Woods Annual Meeting and Program, on Sunday, November 8 at 1 p.m., at Thorn Creek Nature Center, 247 Monee Road, Park Forest. This event includes a program, hike, refreshments, and a short meeting to enlighten those who’d like to know more about Thorn Creek Nature Center and Thorn Creek Woods Nature Preserve.

Olivier Caron, Quaternary Geologist with the Illinois State Geological Survey will tell us about the project to produce large-scale, 3D geologic maps of glacial deposits in our area to gain a better understanding of the complex geology left behind by repeated glaciations and associated flooding events. Then join him and naturalist April Richards for a hike exploring Thorn Creek Woods.

The geology presentation is sponsored by the Jim Marzuki Memorial Fund, established by Friends of Thorn Creek Woods to enhance public programming. The program is free and open to the public ages 12 and up. Refreshments will be provided.

Formed in 1969 Friends of Thorn Creek Woods is the citizens’ activist group responsible for preserving the 985 acre Thorn Creek Woods. They helped secure its dedication as an Illinois Nature Preserve, and form the unique inter-governmental Management Commission to oversee the preserve as one, single preserve.

Against all odds, Friends efforts ensured permanent protection for this land – a unique open space that enhances Park Forest and the entire region.

The preservation of TCW is a history of people. Through the years, over 1500 people organized and fought to preserve the woods. They staff the nature center, develop exhibits, lead programs, build trails, monitor species and raise funds for programs and improvements.

Thousands of visitors experience wildness in these woods – the centerpiece in an expanding network of open space in the south suburbs. Young and old, groups and individuals, schools and families – they walk the trails, enjoy nature programs and explore the Nature Center. And Friends of Thorn Creek Woods make all this possible.

Become a Friends member today. One year memberships are $10 with $50 for organizations and $150 for Life memberships. Mail to Friends of Thorn Creek Woods at Box 159, Richton Park, IL 60471.

For more information, contact Thorn Creek Nature Center, 247 Monee Rd, Park Forest, 708-747-6320, email [email protected], www.tcwoods.org or stop in the nature center between noon and 4 p.m. on Friday through Sunday. Three and a half miles of Thorn Creek trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. Trail walkers should be aware that our south bridge across Thorn Creek was removed. The new north bridge across Thorn Creek is open and all the trails are open. Walkers should plan their hikes to allow for coming back around the trails to cross at the north bridge only. There are signs and maps at the trail head.
