Statement by Rep. Jan Schakowsky on President Obama’s Extension of Additional Benefits to Same-Sex Couples

Washington, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)—June 20, 2014. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after President Barack Obama’s announcement that, in almost all instances, federal benefits and obligations for same-sex married couples would be provided regardless of where the couple resides:

“I applaud President Obama’s continued action to extend equality to LGBT Americans. Today he announced that, in almost all instances, federal benefits and obligations for same-sex married couples would be provided regardless of where the couple resides.

This comes on the heels of his announcement earlier this week prohibiting federal contractors from engaging in employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. These are certainly victories for everyone who is committed to equal rights.”

The President is doing all that he can. Now Congress should do its own part. That is why I am a co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would repeal what is left of the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act and make absolutely certain that all married couples have full access to critical federal benefits, including those covered in the President’s announcement today.”

“I will continue to work with others, whenever possible, to push for equal rights for the LGBT community.”
