HB 4105 Would Halt Freedom in Texas
Austin –-(ENEWSPF)–May 11, 2015. The Texas House of Representatives will consider legislation this week that seeks to subvert a potential U.S. Supreme Court ruling on marriage for same-sex couples.
HB 4105 would prohibit local and state officials from granting, enforcing or respecting marriage licenses for gay and lesbian couples, and would ban the use of public funds to issue or recognize marriage licenses for same-sex couples. The bill’s supporters have said their goal is to defy a potential Supreme Court ruling striking down the state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples.
“This legislation is out of step with the majority of Texans who believe marriage is a fundamental freedom that should not be denied to anyone,” said Nick Hudson, state director of Texas for Marriage. “House Bill 4105 is mean-spirited, discriminatory, and the antithesis of the values of freedom and family that we hold dear in the Lone Star State. We urge the House to defeat this misguided legislation and instead focus its attention on helping, not harming, Texas families.”
HB 4105 is one of more than 20 proposed bills in the Texas Legislature that would enshrine discrimination against gay and transgender Texans into state law.
