The U.S. Healthcare System: Reflected in the Lives of Henrietta Lacks and Her Family

University Park, IL—(ENEWSPF)—March 12, 2012.  In 1951, a sample of Henrietta Lacks’ cells were taken without her consent and used for medical research.  While the research led to advance in cancer treatment, the polio vaccine, and gene mapping, the family never benefitted from or knew of the research.  How have medical ethics changed as a result?

A lecture, ‘The U.S. Healthcare System: Reflected in the Lives of Henrietta Lacks and Her Family’ will be held on Tuesday, March 27 at 1:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University (GSU), 1 University Parkway, University Park, IL.  The lecture will feature David “Sonny” Lacks, Henrietta’s son, along with one of his adult children.

The lecture is free and open to the public.  However, seating is limited.  Register online by Tuesday, March 20 at www.govst.edu/Henrietta_Lacks/.

The lecture is sponsored by GSU’s Intellectual Life Committee, College of Health and Human Services and College of Education.
