Thursday, Oct. 1: #TheyDontCare: A Musical March for Rekia Boyd

Connecting the murder of Rekia Boyd to the criminalization of young Black people.

CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—September 30, 2015. CHICAGO 9/30: On Thursday, October 1st, middle school students from the Village Leadership Academy (VLA) and the family of Rekia Boyd will hold a musical march beginning at 5:30pm at Rekia’s Tree, at 15th St. & Albany in Douglas Park, where Rekia’s life was stolen by off-duty police officer Dante Servin. The march will end at the Juvenile Detention Center, at 1100 S Hamilton, with a noise demonstration to show love and solidarity with the young people inside.

VLA students say they are organizing the march because young Black and Brown people are systemically targeted, harassed, and criminalized by the Chicago Police Department. “We are struggling. We are dying. We are fighting back,” they wrote in a facebook event post for the march.

The goal of the action is to connect the murder of Rekia Boyd to the criminalization of young Black people in Chicago and across the country. During the march, students, teachers and community members will remix and update Michael Jackson’s historic “They Don’t Care About Us” music video. March participants are encouraged to bring drums and other musical instruments.

The recent recommendation by IPRA to fire Dante Servin, the CPD officer who murdered Rekia Boyd, is only the first of three steps that must be completed to terminate Servin from the police force. This march aims to keep up the pressure to fire Servin and to demand justice for Rekia Boyd.
