Banies is just one of several panelists to be featured at an open forum, ‘Generating Home: Struggles, Challenges, Change…Facing Life in Spite of Our Past,’ to be held on Monday, March 11 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in GSU’s Engbretson Hall. Sponsored by GSU’s Social Work Department, and made possible by a grant from the GSU Intellectual Life Committee, the program is free and open to the public. Woodcocks Spring Sky Dance – Friday, March 22

On Friday, March 22 area birders will have the opportunity to watch the spectacular sky dance of the male American Woodcock at the Goodenow Grove Preserve. The program starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Plum Creek Nature Center, 27064 S. Dutton Road, Beecher, with an explanation of the woodcock’s unique habits, followed by a short, easy walk to the viewing site. At sunset the male woodcock lands on the bare, mossy grounds and begins to strut around while making a series of throaty “peents.” Suddenly the peenting stops and the bird flutters skyward in a series of wide spirals while emitting a musical twitter. Higher and higher he goes while the twitter gets louder and louder, unti8l the bird is just a speck in the sky. Then, without warning, he tumbles down while making a soft, liquid warble. At a few feet from the ground he levels off, returns to the same mossy spot where the performance began, and resumes the peenting, strutting dance. The ritual display continues for an hour in the dark. At daybreak the whole show is repeated. And where is the female during this performance. This display is one of nature’s most unusual mating rituals. Don’t miss the show!
