Harrisburg, IL—(ENEWSPF)—February 29, 2012. The National Weather Service reported that an EF4 tornado struck Harrisburg, Illinois just before 5 a.m. Top winds of 170 mph. were reported. At least six people have been killed. Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed.
Governor Pat Quinn has declared the small downstate community a disaster area after viewing the damage today. Harrisburg is located about 330 miles from Chicago and near the Shawnee National Forest.
Harrisburg Mayor Eric Gregg says his city will rebuild following today’s deadly tornado. A curfew has been imposed Wednesday night beginning at 6 p.m.
Storms also pounded other parts of the Midwest, including Branson, Missouri.
