Congresswoman Duckworth: U.S. Should Heed President Obama’s Call to Lead with Strength, Not Fear

SCHAUMBURG, IL –(ENEWSPF)–December 8, 2015.  Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) today issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s Oval Office Address to the Nation:

“From the Oval Office, President Obama called on each of us to lead with strength, not fear, as we work to win the global war on terror and overcome the very real threats we face. I share the President’s conviction that the United States must galvanize every facet of American power – military, diplomacy, intelligence, law enforcement and yes, deeply held humanitarian and democratic values – to lead a global campaign that degrades and destroys ISIL.

“The President rightfully called on Congress to finally acknowledge what has long been reality: America is at war with ISIL. Even as we cannot let ourselves get drawn into yet another protracted ground war, we owe our constituents and particularly the brave Americans who wear the uniform an honest debate about the nature of the threat we face and the strength, determination and resilience that will be required of all Americans to defeat ISIL. Congress owes them a vote on authorizing the use of military force against ISIL.

“As the President also highlighted, our efforts to combat terrorism should not stop at the waters’ edge. We can and must improve security within our borders as well, and I am helping lead the fight to improve visa program security and to close loopholes that make it easier for terrorists to infiltrate our nation and then legally purchase and possess firearms.”
