Congresswoman Robin Kelly Statement on National Gun Violence Awareness Day 2015

WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)—June 2, 2015. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL) issued the following statement today in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day:

“Today, we recognize the first annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day –on  what would have been Hadiya Pendleton’s  18th birthday had she not been tragically shot and killed a little over two years ago.  To commemorate the day, I joined my House colleagues in wearing orange – the color hunters wear to alert their fellow hunters of their presence – as a symbol of the value of human life.

We have an epidemic of gun violence in America. This year is the first in which gun deaths are actually on track to surpass car accidents as the leading cause of death for young Americans.  This is simply unacceptable.

Congress must do more to advance common sense gun violence prevention legislation to bring peace and stability to our communities.  Last year, I released the 2014 Kelly Report: Gun Violence in America, the first comprehensive Congressional analysis of America’s gun violence epidemic.   I urge my colleagues to work with me to implement the findings in the report and advance legislation that  balances our Second Amendment rights with the right of all Americans to live free from the threat of gun violence.”
