Congresswoman Robin Kelly Statement on Senate Republican Letter to Iran on Nuclear Deal

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)—March 10, 2015. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL) issued the following statement today in response to a letter sent to Iran by 47 Republican Senators warning against making a nuclear deal with the Obama administration.

“America’s national security is an issue that those of us trusted by the public to serve in Congress must take seriously.  In the midst of these critical negotiations with Iran that have important global security implications, Americans cannot afford to have leaders who seek to obstruct and undermine legitimate diplomatic efforts in order to score political points,” Kelly said.

“It’s disappointing that 47 U.S. Senators took the irresponsible step of sending a misguided letter to Iran in an attempt to scuttle negotiations rather than work with the White House.  It is particularly disappointing that my Senator Mark Kirk signed on to this letter.  In doing so he failed to display the party independence and policy thoughtfulness he’d promised when he said he’d work across the aisle on important matters like our national security.  This Administration and this Congress must be united in our commitment to ensuring that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon, and it takes Democrats and Republicans working together to make that happen.”

Congresswoman Kelly serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade, as well as the House Oversight and Government Reform’s National Security Subcommittee.
