Today, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the ‘Connected Government Act’ (H.R. 2331), authored by Congresswoman Robin Kelly. This bipartisan bill would ensure that all government websites are mobile-friendly.
“With more than 40 percent of web traffic to government websites coming from mobile devices, it’s basic good government to make certain that government websites work on all devices Americans use,” said Congresswoman Kelly, top Democrat on the Oversight Committee’s Information Technology (IT) subcommittee.
According to an Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) report, more than 40 percent of government websites are not mobile-friendly, including the application for federal student aid (FAFSA) and the launch point for bidding on government contracts.
“As more and more Americans use smartphones to access government services, we need to keep pace with technological innovation,” said Congresswoman Kelly. “More than three-quarters of Americans have and use a smartphone and one in ten exclusively use a smartphone to access the Internet. It’s clear that the time for a mobile-friendly government websites was yesterday.”
In September, the bill passed Congress’s Oversight and Government Reform Committee and it was determined to present ‘no significant cost’ to the government by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
“I’d like to thank the co-lead on this bill, Congressman Frank Pallone as well as House co-sponsor Congressmen Mark Meadows (R-NC) and Senate leads, Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Cory Gardner (R-CO), for their working so hard alongside me to pass this bill into law,” added Congresswoman Kelly.
