CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL–(ENEWSPF)–August 9, 2011. Sex offenders would be required to report themselves to security staff on college campuses under legislation, sponsored by state Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights), which was signed into law by the governor recently.
“College is a new and exciting time for young people but sending your son or daughter off on their own can be a stressful thing for parents,” DeLuca said. “I want to do everything possible to give parents the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly who is on campus with their child. This is a necessary law that will make college campuses safer.”
DeLuca is the chief sponsor of House Bill 295, which requires a sex offender who is a student or employee at a college to register with the campus security office. Current law requires offenders to register with a local police or sheriff’s office, but not with the campus. Under DeLuca’s bill, campus security will have accurate information on sex offenders living and working on the premises.
“In many schools, the campus security is the first line of protection for students,” DeLuca added. “So it stands to reason that the school should be apprised of a sex offender who lives on campus or is working anywhere near students. Many colleges also offer child care services and recreational services for young people, so it is vital that we protect them from sex offenders as well.”
