Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— Staff reported to the Village Board Saturday that asbestos removal at the Marshall Field’s building in DownTown Park Forest has begun.

This signals the first step in demolition of the signature structure in Park Forest’s DownTown which Village officials have worked more than a decade to fill.

Local colleges, developers hoping to convert the landmark structure into offices, business space, or condominimiums — all have been detered by the foreboding costs of refurbishing the building.

The building has been vacant since 1996 and is costing taxpayers more than $80,000 a year to maintain.

Staff said Saturday residents could expect to see border fences erected around the structure during the coming week as demolition continues.
