DOT Secretary LaHood Celebrates New Recovery Act Funded Terminal at Peoria International Airport

WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–April 27, 2011. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today celebrated the opening of the new terminal at Peoria International Airport, paid for in part with $6.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

“Our nation’s airports are critical for economic growth and help to strengthen our ability to compete worldwide,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This new passenger terminal will support local and regional economic development and help bring good paying jobs to the Peoria area.”

The $6.4 million in Recovery Act funds, along with $15.5 million in Airport Improvement Program grants, paid for public sections of the new $65 million, 125,000 square-foot passenger terminal.

“The Recovery Act has allowed us to make needed improvements to airports around the country to ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of our air transportation system,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.

Under the Recovery Act, more than $1.3 billion has been made available nationwide for both airport improvement projects and air traffic control facility and system upgrades. Because of low construction bids for projects, more Recovery Act dollars were available for additional facilities, equipment and airport projects. These grants have been distributed to airports that serve commercial passengers, cargo and general aviation.
