From Tents to Homes: Celebrating Eviction Resistance!

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 15, 2012.  On  October 15, 2011, thousands marched with Occupy Chicago, from Jackson and LaSalle to Congress Plaza, attempting to establish an encampment to bring attention to mass inequality and corporate control of our political system. The City of Chicago responded by illegally evicting demonstrators, arresting 305 protesters over the course of two weeks. Meanwhile, the U.S. faces an ongoing eviction and foreclosure crisis, destroying lives and damaging the stability of our communities.

“Occupy is celebrating a victory today, on the one year anniversary of our eviction from Grant Park,” says Kyla Bourne. “A judge ruled this September that our eviction was illegal. When will the City and the Banks stop committing the crime of eviction against homeowners in Chicago?”

On October 15, 2012, Occupy Chicago, Occupy el Barrio, and Occupy Rogers Park will rally and march with The Ant-Eviction Campaign, and Communities United Against Foreclosure and Eviction, to celebrate resistance against the eviction of Occupy camps across the country, and the struggles of community groups fighting to keep people in their homes.

Demonstrators will rally at 6pm at Jackson & LaSalle, marching to Congress Plaza (Congress & Michigan) for a 7:15pm press conference. They will be joined by the Overpass Light Brigade (http://overpasslightbrigade.org), who’s large illuminated signs have supported Occupy and other movements across the Midwest. At 8pm, Occupy will host a Free Speech Fest in Congress Plaza, with music and dancing.
