SPRINGFIELD – May 16 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that the federal government approved the state’s request for federal assistance to Grundy, Livingston, McLean, Sangamon and Stephenson counties to help local governments recoup many expenses related to the early February winter storm.
Local governments in the five approved counties are now eligible to receive reimbursement for 75 percent of their eligible storm-related expenses, including snow removal for a 48-hour period, overtime, debris removal and repair or replacement of damaged public facilities.
“It is very important that local governments can recoup costs of responding to February’s historic winter storm,” said Governor Quinn. “By working with the Federal government, we have been able to help municipalities and counties bear the expense of one of the largest storms in recent history.”
The federal government previously approved Governor Quinn’s request for federal assistance to local governments in 60 counties affected by the major winter storm. Storm-related expense information for the five counties approved today was not available when the original request was submitted. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) worked closely with county officials to gather the needed information and submitted a request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on April 8.
“We will work closely with FEMA to help expedite reimbursement to these local governmental bodies,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken.
