Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)-October 21, 2013. If you are one of the many people who are in need of health insurance and are very confused about the new healthcare law, help is on the way. On Monday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. the Park Forest Library will present information on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in the Library’s Ringering Room. A representative from the Campaign for Better Health Care will provide an overview of the major provisions of the law.

In addition, the Unitarian Universalist Community Church (UUCC) and Faith Caucus of the Campaign for Better Health Care will be hosting a workshop on Thursday, October 24 beginning at 7 p.m. at UUCC, 70 Sycamore Drive, Park Forest. Valuable information will be provided on ‘Get Covered Illinois’ the official health marketplace. Those that enroll in a plan by December 15th will have healthcare coverage beginning January 1, 2014. Another one of Park Forest’s favorite fall activities will take place this week when St. Iraenus Catholic Church hosts its annual ‘All You Can Eat’ spaghetti dinner on Sunday, October 27. Serving times are 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for children under 10. If you’ve never been to St. Iraenus’ spaghetti dinner, don’t miss out this year and enjoy lots of fun with your neighbors and some of the best spaghetti and meat balls you’ll ever eat. Park Forest Zoning Code Update: Public Meeting – Tuesday, October 29th

On Tuesday, October 29 from 6: 30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dining on the Green 349, Main Street, in DownTown Park Forest, the Village wants to hear from you. Park Forest continues to makes strides toward providing a high quality of life for its residents, redeveloping commercial areas, and employing sustainable practices throughout the community. In order to better align its development regulations with these community priorities, the Village is now working with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to update its zoning and subdivision ordinances. To guide this process, the Village wants to hear from you! This meeting is free and open to the public. All residents, business and property owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders are invited. At this public meeting, participants will be introduced to zoning concepts and will also take part in an interactive activity to provide feedback that informs the Village’s development regulations update. Calvary United Church, 425 N. Orchard, Park Forest, will hold its 1st Annual Chili Dinner on Thursday, October 31 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Getting together on a Fall October day with friends of the community and Calvary members sounds like a great idea as we continue to grow with one another. Life is hectic but having food always seems to slow us down. Combining food and friends is Calvary’s next venture as we have planned our 1st Annual Chili Dinner! The event will feature 3 – 4 types of chili including vegetarian with all the fixins’ along with warm spiced apple cider. It’s Halloween Time at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum – Through November 2

Vintage Halloween decorations are on display in the 1950s Park Forest House Museum from September 14 through November 2. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. ‘Signs, Symbols and Stories: Graphic Novels, Street and Graffiti Inspired Art’ —Through November 10

Congressman John Lewis of the 5th District of Georgia openly admits that his reading of a comic book called “The Montgomery Story” about Dr. Martin Luther King inspired his participation in the civil rights movement. So, it was not unimaginable that Lewis would turn to the graphic comic format to describe his own role in that movement. The first in a planned trilogy “March: Book One” was recently published. Written by Congressman Lewis and his staffer Andrew Aydin, the book was illustrated by Nate Powell. Original illustrations from “March” will be featured by an exhibit entitled “Signs, Symbols, Stories: Graphic Novel, Street and Graffiti-Inspired Art” that will run through November 10. It also features the works of artists Dave Acosta, Jessica Flores, Chris Hammer, Rob Hassan, Gretchen Jankowski, Corinne Mucha, Shannon O’Leary, Turtel Onli, Stephanie Rattanachane, Joan Reilly and Elliott Scott. ‘A…My Name is Alice’ – Tickets Now on Sale — Limited Seating Available for Each Performance

‘A…My Name is Alice’ is a musical revue conceived by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd. Playful, funny, sophisticated, and insightful, it consists of a series of songs and sketches portraying women of all ages and types in a variety of situations and relationships. Alice made its Off-Broadway debut in 1983 and offers us a glimpse into the historical fight for gender equality while also asking us to consider women’s experiences and how they have shifted in the last 30 years. ‘Ways of Making: Installation Art’ at GSU Gallery — Opens Monday, October 21

The Visual Arts Gallery at Governors State University is presenting “Ways of Making: Installation Art,” featuring the work of artists Barbara Hashimoto and Dana Major and the students from the Theater and Performance Studies program under the direction of Dr. Patrick Santoro, from October 21 – December 2, 2013. An artist’s reception celebrating the exhibition will be held on Wednesday, October 30, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. The exhibition, the first in the gallery’s 2013-14 “Ways of Making” series, features two professional artists who focus on the connections between performance art and installation art in a gallery setting, as well as student work. The “Ways of Making” series of exhibitions seeks to explore the disciplines and practices taught in the art program at GSU.

“Ways of Making: Installation Art” was inspired by the recent addition of Theater and Performance Studies program at GSU. GSU Art Gallery curator, Jeff Stevenson said, “I selected artists Barbara Hashimoto and Dana Major because they used installation as their primary form of expression, not just an occasional or one-off installation here and there.” Barbara Hashimoto’s visual and performance work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Japan, Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East. It is in more than 300 collections, including The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago (Joan Flasch Collection), The Museum of Arts and Design, and The National Museum for Women in the Arts. Working in a broad array of media, she is particularly known for both her ceramic- and paper-based work of intimate scale as well as and her large-scale installations and expansive environmental art projects embracing activism and community engagement.

Barbara’s work in the exhibit is “underfoot”, has tangible and conceptual aspects to it, and activates the space. Dana Major is a multi-media artist and a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Major has been exhibiting her work since 1997 across the United States, particularly in Kentucky, Philadelphia and Chicago. Her work is informed by the look of the natural world at all scales, and ways of seeing, from microscopy to astronomy. Dana’s work in this exhibit is “overhead,” uses light, shadow and an interplay of real and imagined, which contrasts Hashimoto’s work. ‘Histories/Photographies’ Exhibition of Works by Local Artists – Through December 8

The DePaul Art Museum examines photography and its relational place in time and history with “Histories/Photographies,” a new exhibition of works by local artists. The exhibition will run through December 8. Through an array of strategies, these artists record the traces of the past that exist in the present, mine the telling and dissemination of photography’s own history, and engage with the ever-evolving materiality of photographs. Their work reveals that history, and the history of photography in particular, is not merely an episodic succession of events, innovations, and movements, but rather a far more complex layering of recordings, encounters and perspectives through and across time. The artists featured in the exhibition include: Jeremy Bolen, Alan Cohen, Adam Ekberg, Myra Greene, Shane Huffman, Barbara Kasten, Jason Lazarus, Aspen Mays, John Opera, Jason Reblando, David Schalliol, Matthew Schlagbaum and Adam Schreiber. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the museum, 935 W. Fullerton Ave., just east of the CTA’s Fullerton ‘L’ stop. The museum is free and open to the public every day. The exhibition runs through December 8. On Saturday, October 19, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the museum will host a day-long symposium in conjunction with the “Histories/Photographies” exhibition. The symposium will be the inaugural event of the recently formed Chicago Photography Working Group ([email protected]).

This event will bring together scholars, curators and practitioners of the medium from across the Chicago area for wide-ranging discussions of the relationship between history and photography. The day will include a panel of scholarly papers, featuring a keynote address by Blake Stimson, a set of conversations pairing artists and scholars and a concluding group discussion of the day’s themes. The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Center services include resume development, access to online job boards and websites, instruction in how to conduct an online job search and improve keyboarding skills, and assistance of staff. Annual College Fair at PSC – Tuesday, October 29

PSC is hosting the Illinois College Exposition Fair (ICE) from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 29, in the Atrium on the PSC main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. More than 120 representatives from in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities will be on hand to answer high school students’ and their parents’ questions about programs, campus activities, and admissions requirements. Current PSC students who are thinking about transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree also can learn about their transfer options. There will be two financial aid seminars about applying for federal financial aid at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. in the Conference Center Auditorium. Writing on Chicago’s Early Black Experience – Tuesday, October 22

Brian Dolinar, editor of a new book featuring never-before-published reflections of African-American writers living in Chicago during the 1930s, will speak about the newly edited book, The Negro in Illinois: The WPA Papers at an Oct. 22 lecture at Roosevelt University. The lecture entitled Bound for Freedom: Black WPA Writers Document Chicago’s South Side is free and open to the public and will be held at 4 p.m. in the University’s 10th floor library, 430 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. The second in Roosevelt’s 2013-14 St. Clair Drake lecture series, the event will look back in time to when President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration put promising black writers to work in Illinois on a project to chronicle aspects of Chicago’s African-American experience. Major black writers of the day, including Harlem Renaissance poet Arna Bontemps, white proletarian writer Jack Conroy, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, Katherine Dunham, Fenton Johnson, Frank Yerby and Richard Durham wrote at the time about everything from public and domestic life to politics, religion, literature and the performing arts.

The Negro in Illinois project never came to fruition as a publication until several months ago due to the painstaking efforts by Dolinar, who reconstructed the project from papers in the Vivian G. Harsh Collection of Afro-American History and Literature kept at the Carter G. Woodson Library in Chicago and other archives across the country. Sponsored by Roosevelt’s St. Clair Drake Center for African and African American Studies, the lecture is being presented as part of a lecture series that honors and reflects upon the significant speeches Drake make in 1963 – 100 years after Emancipation. Dolinar will discuss the significance of Drake’s relationship to the Negro in Illinois writers and the Black Chicago Renaissance they were part of. The Bound for Freedom lecture is supported by a generous gift from Roosevelt alumnus Robert Johnson and his wife, Rose. South Suburban College (SSC), 15800 South State Street, South Holland

Two Non-credit CNA Sections at SSC – Classes Begin Monday, October 21

SSC’s Office of Continuing Education is offering two new sections for the CNA–Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program, which is now available only as a non-credit course. Successful completion of the CNA course is required in order to become eligible to take the State of Illinois Nursing Assistant Certification Examination, and is the first step towards entrance into the SSC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. The CNA program will consist of 147 hours of training. By the end of this eight-week course, students will demonstrate 21 Critical Basic Nursing Skills through a combination of lecture, lab and supervised clinical experiences at a long-term health care facility. Each individual who successfully passes the certification exam will then be placed on the State Registry for Health Care Workers.

The two new class sections will run from October 21st through December 12th at the University & College Center in Oak Forest–morning and afternoon options will be offered. The morning section will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. with Labs on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.; the afternoon section will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m.–6:30 p.m. with Labs on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m. Students must submit a health physical, proof of health insurance or signed release of liability waiver, and completion of a fingerprint criminal history record. The total cost of the program is $999 with books and supplies included (Financial Aid does not cover the cost of this program, nor the physical and background check).

Thorn Creek Chamber Players Fall Concert – Registration Required by Wednesday, October 23

As the leaves fall come celebrate the woods with a concert by Ingrid Krizan and the Thorn Creek Chamber Players on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at Thorn Creek Nature Center. Ingrid is a classically trained professional cellist who weaves seasonal nature narratives into her music. Bringing this music, these ideas and live performances to a wide audience are her passions. Her unique “Bach & I” performances are very popular in the area and particularly at our Thorn Creek music events. The newly formed Thorn Creek Chamber Players will perform in the warm wooded acoustics of our 1860’s nature center building. Drawing Pictographs – Registration Required by Friday, October 25

Ancient people painted real and imaginary creatures on stones and cave walls. Called pictographs and petroglyph, these drawings illustrated stories, marked the passage of time and summoned magic and luck. Join us at Thorn Creek Nature Center Sunday, October 27, for Drawing Pictographs to learn this ancient Native American art. There are two session available 1-2 p.m. or 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Internationally-known artist Pat Moore, an instructor at the Tall Grass Arts Association that serves all of the South Suburbs, will guide young artists in painting symbolic representations of native plants and animals on stones and bark paper to take home, suitable for display. We’ll create fanciful creatures, exploring the shapes and lines. Colors can be used to express warmth, sunlight, the earth and more.

This program is inspired by the work and interests of the late Jim Marzuki, local artist, teacher and naturalist. He thought that Native Americans were recording their natural history – that the pictographs and petroglyphs were pictures of plants and animals of their shared environment. In his publication “Native American Natural History” he reproduced many of these drawings and assigned species names to them. “Drawing Pictographs” is open to all ages; children under age 6 should be accompanied by an adult. All art materials will be supplied and refreshments will be served. There is a $5 fee per child per session to participate. Participants must register by Friday, October 25. Thorn Creek Nature Center is housed in a historic building, originally Immanuel Lutheran Church of Matteson, Illinois built in 1862, and later Village Bible Church of Park Forest.
