In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, the annual Twilight Memorial Parade will take place in Park Forest on Thursday, October 10 beginning at 7 p.m. A short memorial service precedes this parade and begins at 6:30 PM at St. Irenaeus Church. The Memorial Parade will step off promptly at 7 PM and will head east on Indianwood Boulevard, left/north on Forest to Westwood Drive, left/west on Westwood to Orchard Drive, right/north on Orchard Drive to Indiana Street, right/east on Indiana to Illinois Street, left/north on Illinois back around to Indiana, left/south on Indiana and back around to Orchard Drive, right/south on Orchard to Westwood, right/west on Westwood around to Sauk Trail, across Sauk and south on Shabbona to Orchard Drive, left/north on Orchard back up across Sauk to Indianwood and then to the Park Forest Fire Station.

Come out along the parade route on Thursday to honor our courageous men and women who serve on the Park Forest Fire Department.

The Park Forest Fire Department will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 12. Activities for the day include station tours, fire safety and severe weather presentations in the Fire Safety Trailer, and lots more. Please come out and join the fun-filled day at the fire station. The Board of Trustees will hold a Board Meeting on Monday, October 7 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Residents are encouraged to attend. Park Forest Zoning Code Update: Public Meeting to be Held on October 29th

On Tuesday, October 29 from 6: 30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dining on the Green 349, Main Street, in DownTown Park Forest, the Village wants to hear from you. Park Forest continues to makes strides toward providing a high quality of life for its residents, redeveloping commercial areas, and employing sustainable practices throughout the community. In order to better align its development regulations with these community priorities, the Village is now working with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to update its zoning and subdivision ordinances. To guide this process, the Village wants to hear from you! This meeting is free and open to the public. All residents, business and property owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders are invited. At this public meeting, participants will be introduced to zoning concepts and will also take part in an interactive activity to provide feedback that informs the Village’s development regulations update. Trip to the Annual Way of Way of Lights Christmas Display and Anheuser-Busch Brewery – Registration Now in Progress

Join us on December 11 and 12 for a trip to Our Lady of the Snows Annual Way of the Lights Christmas display and tour of Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Wintertime sparkles at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows as the Annual Way of Lights Christmas display illuminates the grounds. Since 1970, The Oblates Missionary in Belleville, Illinois has invited one and all to make the Way of Lights a part of their family tradition. This breathtaking display focuses on the story of Creation with a mile-and-a-half drive with over one million lights electro-art displays and life-size biblical statues which take you on a scriptural Journey to Bethlehem. Trees from decorators and designers from the St. Louis/Metro Area will display their best creations showcasing ‘Songs of the Season’. Community Choirs will perform in the Visitors Center and guest can enjoy other indoor attractions and shop at in the Holiday Shop. Overnight Accommodations are at the Shrine Hotel.

On the second day, December 12 guest will visit St. Louis, Mo. The activities planned in St. Louis include: The Gateway Arch, Forest Park, once home to the 1904 World’s Fair. It’s Halloween Time at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum – Through November 2

Vintage Halloween decorations are on display in the 1950s Park Forest House Museum from September 14 through November 2. The 1950s Park Forest House Museum at 141 Forest Blvd, Park Forest, is open Wednesday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum can also be open for groups by appointment, at other times. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. ‘Signs, Symbols and Stories: Graphic Novels, Street and Graffiti Inspired Art’ —Through November 10

Congressman John Lewis of the 5th District of Georgia openly admits that his reading of a comic book called “The Montgomery Story” about Dr. Martin Luther King inspired his participation in the civil rights movement. So, it was not unimaginable that Lewis would turn to the graphic comic format to describe his own role in that movement. The first in a planned trilogy “March: Book One” was recently published. Written by Congressman Lewis and his staffer Andrew Aydin, the book was illustrated by Nate Powell. Original illustrations from “March” will be featured by an exhibit entitled “Signs, Symbols, Stories: Graphic Novel, Street and Graffiti-Inspired Art” that will run through November 10. It also features the works of artists Dave Acosta, Jessica Flores, Chris Hammer, Rob Hassan, Gretchen Jankowski, Corinne Mucha, Shannon O’Leary, Turtel Onli, Stephanie Rattanachane, Joan Reilly and Elliott Scott. ‘Our Town’ Inaugural Production in New DePaul Theatre – Through October 13

The Theatre School at DePaul University is pleased to present “Our Town” as the inaugural production in the new building, located at Racine and Fullerton on the Lincoln Park Campus. Performances will be in the Fullerton Stage theatre, a 250-seat thrust theatre located on the first floor of the school.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” directed by Damon Kiely, runs through Oct. 13. The Prairie State College (PSC) Natural Science Department is hosting the 44th Annual South Suburban Earth Science Club Fossil, Gem, Mineral, and Jewelry

Show Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Prairie Center Gym on PSC’s main campus. The event is co-sponsored by the South Suburban Earth Science Club (SSESC). The annual show is an opportunity for gem and fossil enthusiasts to meet the experts, get a close look at the latest finds, learn about the geological history of the area, and purchase rare gems, fossils, and artifacts from around the world.  Scouts have the opportunity to earn their geology badges at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. on both days. Scouts should bring their scout handbooks. Additionally, Joel Knapper, NASA ambassador, will make presentations throughout the day on October 20 about past, current, and future NASA programs. ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ – Through October 17

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, an exhibition of Saul Aguirre’s art works entitle ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery through October 17. There will be an artist reception on Wednesday, September 25 from 4 p.m. to 4 p.m. ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ concentrates on the crucial years of child development in a creative way. The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Representatives from companies and institutions from across the metropolitan Chicago area will be recruiting for full- and part-time positions ranging from entry level to professional and managerial levels at the Prairie State College (PSC) annual fall job fair. Lecture On Civil Rights – Saturday, October 14

Roosevelt University will unveil rare speeches on civil rights and freedom by the late Roosevelt professor St. Clair Drake (above) during an Oct. 14 program and lecture on freedom and the March on Washington. The Drake audio tapes, which haven’t been heard since the late great Chicago sociologist delivered them in 1963, on the centennial of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, are part of a program and lecture entitled “Freedom Then, Freedom Now: The March on Washington and the Forgotten History of Civil Rights” that will be presented by guest speaker and University of Wisconsin History Professor Will Jones. Sponsored by Roosevelt’s St. Clair Drake Center for African and African-American Studies, the event will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in Roosevelt’s 10th floor library, 430 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. It is the first of three lectures being presented this academic year by the Drake Center. Jones is an historian of 20th Century United States and has a particular interest in race, class and work. He has also written books on African-American industrial workers in the Jim Crow South and will discuss his recent acclaimed book on the 1963 March on Washington for jobs and freedom.

Discovered recently at Roosevelt University and available for perusal in the archives of the University’s Murray Green Library, the audio tapes are Drake’s reflections, 100 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, on gains made and challenges that lie ahead for African Americans in pursuit of education and integration. The Drake lecture series is supported by a generous gift from Roosevelt alumnus Robert Johnson and his wife, Rose. Annual Falling Leaves Festival – Tuesday, October 8

On Tuesday, October 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 3p.m. at St. Mary School, 227 Monee Road, the Garden Club of Park Forest will hold its annual Falling Leaves Festival. Items for sale will include food baskets, live plants, handmade crafts and knits and white elephant items. A special presentation will be made by Nina Kocial, entitled “What’s Old is New Again.” Tickets are $8 and will be available at the door. Door prizes and refreshments will also be available. EDAG seeks nominees from residents, civic groups, and businesses to recognize a Park Forest business owner who is committed to community service. Donate Unused Air Miles to Support Families of Wounded Servicemembers

“Operation Hero Miles” collects unused frequent flyer miles to help military families visit service members who were injured in Iraq or Afghanistan and are recovering in military hospitals around the world. South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish. Cell phone collection sites currently include:
