Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—September 16, 2013. One of Park Forest’s annual activities that marks the start of fall is taking place on September 21 and 22 – the 58th Park Forest Art Fair. The event will take place each day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in DownTown Park Forest’s Village Green. The Art Fair, which is the second oldest juried art fair in the Chicagoland region, will feature paintings in many media, etchings, sculpture, photographs, ceramics, jewelry and hand-blown glass. There is also an array of activities that will delight children including an art contest, tie dyeing and face painting. Live music and food vendors will also be participating. You’ll find additional information about the Park Forest Art Fair in the ‘Arts & Entertainment’ section.

Another ‘famous’ Park Forest fall event is the Kiwanis Club’s Annual Pancake Day. The 62nd Annual Pancake Day will be held on Saturday, October 4 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rich East High School, 300 Sauk Trail in Park Forest. The event will once again feature all-you-can eat pancakes, sausage and beverages. Discount tickets can be purchased in advance of the event at Park Forest Village Hall, the Park Forest Farmers Market, Tower Cleaners, 230 Forest Boulevard, and from Kiwanis Club members. I know this is one event that I’m going to really miss now that I’m living in Oregon. So be sure to plan on meeting your neighbors for a great breakfast and lots of fun (and have a pancake for me!) Village Board Meeting

The Board of Trustees will meet on Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. In conjunction with this meeting, the Commission on Human Relations will present its 2013 Good Egg Award to Sandra Spann. A reception will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of Village Hall with the presentation ensuing at the Board meeting. Residents are encouraged to attend. • Monday, September 16 at 11 a.m. — 3M Book Club: The Onion Field — Joseph Wambaugh’s best seller. The story of the kidnapping of two plainclothes LAPD officers by a pair of criminals during an evening traffic stop and a subsequent murder.
• Monday, September 16 at 6 p.m. — Classic Movie Monday Nights: ‘The Onion Field’ — Taken from the Joseph Wambaugh book. ‘The Onion Field’ is a true story about a case that changed LAPD policies forever. More than a simple police procedural, though, the film is a character study that follows the aftermath of the murder for all involved. John Savage, as the surviving officer, is called on over and over to reenact the event in court, chided by his superiors and eventually fired from the force, with redemption a long way off. He does a great job in a harrowing role as frustration, guilt, and depression cause his life and career to disintegrate over time. There are impressive early performances by Ted Danson and James Woods.
• Tuesday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. — Yoga Movement and Me — In this series of programs children to explore basic yoga movements with the help of stories, games, and poses.
• Tuesday, September 17 at 4 p.m. – Lights! Camera! Action!: "Bully" — Join the discussion and the movement that’s spreading across America! The library is taking a stand against bullying with the movie Bully. Teens will watch this hard-hitting documentary then discuss its impact and consequences. It’s Halloween Time at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum – Through November 2

Vintage Halloween decorations are on display in the 1950s Park Forest House Museum from September 14 through November 2. The 1950s Park Forest House Museum at 141 Forest Blvd, Park Forest, is open Wednesday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum can also be open for groups by appointment, at other times. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at parkforesthistory.org. 58th Annual Park Forest Art Fair – Saturday & Sunday, September 21 & 22

Boasting a rich history and wealth of gifted artists, along with status as one of the Southland’s most valued annual treasures, the Park Forest Art Fair, sponsored by Tall Grass Arts Association, this month celebrates its 58th year, Sept. 21 and 22, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, in Downtown Park Forest on the Village Green. The artists come from as far as California and Florida. And they hail from all over the metropolitan area, especially the South Suburbs including Chicago Heights, Crete, Frankfort, Glenwood, Homewood and Kankakee. More arrive from Matteson, Monee, Olympia Fields, Peotone, South Holland, Tinley Park and of course, Park Forest. The eclectic nature of the fair is quickly visible to visitors who will see ceramics, etchings, sculpture, photographs, paintings in many media, digital art works, jewelry featuring original elements, and hand-blown glass.

A glass blower will demonstrate this ancient art.

A vast range of activities always delight the younger set, including the almost legendary Children’s Art Contest, tie dyeing, mural painting and a huge favorite, face painting. A musical potpourri, sponsored by the village, fills Saturday’s fair hours and fest favorite Patchouli, a popular Chicagoland folk duo, performs Sunday with a performance by the Grande Prairie Choral Arts group at 1:00 p.m.  Food vendors will be on site as well. GSU is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Bruce Nauman’s ‘House Divided’ and the 35th anniversary of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (NMSP) at Carts & Cocktails 2013 on Saturday, September 21 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Following cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in a lakeside tent, guests at the event will take a motorized tour of the sculpture park, where a breathtaking prairie landscape is home to 28 monumental works by some of the world’s most distinguished sculptors, including the newest addition to the collection, ‘Windwaves,’ by Mexican artists Yvonne Domenge. An exhibition by Joanne Aono entitled ‘1 & One’ will be on display in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery from September 23 through October 18. The PAC Rats Theatre Company of SSC will present ‘Move Over, Mrs. Markham,’ written by John Chapman and Ray Cooney. Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday at GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Tutors and Participants Needed for Adult Volunteer Literacy Program

SSC is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of this free program. New tutor training sessions will take place on SSC’s Main Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from September 17 through October 1. The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once certified, tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods throughout the south suburban area. Open House – Thursday, September 19

The Park Forest Weight Watchers Club is now an Award-winning Club. To celebrate its success, the Club will be holding an Open House at St. Irenaeus Church, 78 Cherry Street, Park Forest, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. St. Irenaeus is located on the corner of Orchard and Indianwood. The public is invited to hear the success stories of its previous members. Recently, two members have each lost 100 pounds. Free Psychotherapy Available from GSU’s Psychology Program

GSU’s Psychology Department is offering free psychotherapy services to members of the community. Conversations with a psychotherapist can help people cope with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, and life transition problems. Confidential, one-on-one sessions are held with a GSU graduate student in psychology under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Senior citizens of all income levels are invited to lunch weekdays at the Community Nutrition Network (CNN) site located inside the Rich Township’s Shirley J. Green Senior Center. The CNN site is open to all south suburban residents, including those living outside of Rich Township. Participants must be 60 years of age or older. The suggested donation for lunch is $2.50. Impact of Fracking for Natural Gas in Illinois – Wednesday, September 18

On Wednesday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m., the Park Forest Area League of Women Voters will host a meeting at the home of Mary Lubertozzi, 3434 Attica Rd., Olympia Fields. The event will begin with a potluck dinner followed by a discussion by Jennifer Hensley, Program Manager for the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club on the impact of fracking for natural gas in Illinois. Fracking is a process where high pressure water is pumped underground to fracture geologic formations to release natural gas.  Fracking poses threats to drinking water and other water resources. There are no federal regulations on this industry, so responsibility for protecting the environment from this activity has become the responsibility of individual states. The League of Women Voters supports efforts to control pollution of our natural resources in order to preserve the physical, chemical and biological inte4grity of ecosystems and to protect public health. The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in the topic is encouraged to attend to learn more about this important issue. Experience the Thorn Creek Nature Center

Thorn Creek Nature Center is housed in a historic building, originally Immanuel Lutheran Church of Matteson, Illinois built in 1862, and later Village Bible Church of Park Forest. A gothic frame country church, its notable architectural features include curved ceiling, tongue-and-groove paneling and a raised pulpit. Its current attractions are displays of the preserve’s flora and fauna, a bird feeder viewing area, Eugene E. Schwartz reference library and an expanded children’s section. Park Forest Farmers’ Market 40th Season – Every Saturday Through October 26

Every Saturday morning through October 26th, you’ll find that the Park Forest Farmers’ Market has something for everyone. The Market opens at 7 a.m. and ends at noon.  Rain or shine, come and enjoy fresh produce, bakery items, gourmet cheeses, and herbs. Kiwanis Club

62 Annual Pancake Day – Tickets Now on Sale

The Kiwanis Club will host its 62nd Annual Pancake Day from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at Rich East High School, 300 Sauk Trail, Park Forest. The event will feature all you can eat pancakes, sausage, coffee, mil and lots of fun. Advance tickets are now available and are priced at $5 for adults and $2 for children. South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program.
