Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—September 30, 2013. The Park Forest air will be filled with some delightful smells on Saturday, October 5. Get together with your friends and neighbors and have breakfast at the Kiwanis Club’s 62nd Annual Pancake Day which will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.at Rich East High School. The wonderful smell of garlic will also permeate the air of Park Forest on Saturday when Thorn Creek Nature Center holds its annual Garlic Fest. For those of you who have never been to Garlic Fest the event is an afternoon of family fun celebrating organically grown garlic with recipes, cooking, crafts, hikes, planting and growing demonstrations, garlic refreshments, live music and garlic galore. You’ll find that Garlic Fest offers something of interest for everyone – young and old alike. More details about the event can be found in the ‘Green Events’ section.

The Board of Trustees will hold a Saturday Morning Rules Meeting on October 5 at 9 a.m. at Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Residents are encouraged to attend. Allen Edwards ‘The Singer’ – Tickets Now on Sale

Freedom Hall’s popular Matinee/Senior series will kick-off the season on Tuesday, October 15 at 11 a.m. Allen Edwards, a true artist of our time, will sing the songs you love with a voice you will never forget, his vocal style is reminiscent of greats like Jim Reeves, Perry Como, Eddy Arnold, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin and yet has the power and dynamics of Elvis, Englebert and Neil Diamond to name a few. The Mystical Arts of Tibet – Tickets Now on Sale

On Saturday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m., the Mystical Arts of Tibet, featuring the multiphonic singers of Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform. This group has taken the world by storm while promoting world peach and healing through sacred performing art. Trip to the Covered Bridge Festival – Registration by October 1

On Monday, October 14, adults 21 and older can attend the Covered Bridge Festival in Parke County, Indiana. Trip to the Annual Way of Way of Lights Christmas Display and Anheuser-Busch Brewery – Registration Now in Progress

Join us on December 11 and 12 for a trip to Our Lady of the Snows Annual Way of the Lights Christmas display and tour of Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Wintertime sparkles at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows as the Annual Way of Lights Christmas display illuminates the grounds. Since 1970, The Oblates Missionary in Belleville, Illinois has invited one and all to make the Way of Lights a part of their family tradition. This breathtaking display focuses on the story of Creation with a mile-and-a-half drive with over one million lights electro-art displays and life-size biblical statues which take you on a scriptural Journey to Bethlehem. Trees from decorators and designers from the St. Louis/Metro Area will display their best creations showcasing ‘Songs of the Season’. It’s Halloween Time at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum – Through November 2

Vintage Halloween decorations are on display in the 1950s Park Forest House Museum from September 14 through November 2. The 1950s Park Forest House Museum at 141 Forest Blvd, Park Forest, is open Wednesday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum can also be open for groups by appointment, at other times. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at parkforesthistory.org. ‘Signs, Symbols and Stories: Graphic Novels, Street and Graffiti Inspired Art’ —Through November 10

Congressman John Lewis of the 5th District of Georgia openly admits that his reading of a comic book called "The Montgomery Story" about Dr. Martin Luther King inspired his participation in the civil rights movement. So, it was not unimaginable that Lewis would turn to the graphic comic format to describe his own role in that movement. The first in a planned trilogy "March: Book One" was recently published. Written by Congressman Lewis and his staffer Andrew Aydin, the book was illustrated by Nate Powell. Original illustrations from "March" will be featured by an exhibit entitled "Signs, Symbols, Stories: Graphic Novel, Street and Graffiti-Inspired Art" that will run through November 10. It also features the works of artists Dave Acosta, Jessica Flores, Chris Hammer, Rob Hassan, Gretchen Jankowski, Corinne Mucha, Shannon O’Leary, Turtel Onli, Stephanie Rattanachane, Joan Reilly and Elliott Scott. Comedy Show with Damon Williams – Friday, October 4

On Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m., comedian Damon Williams will perform at the Center. Damon Williams has been featured on BET LIVE and hosted several episodes of the legendary "Showtime at the Apollo" formerly hosted by TV star Steve Harvey. In 1999, Damon performed for more than 300,000 fans as the opening act for the highly successful Kings of Comedy Tour, establishing him as one of the elite comics in the nation. ‘Our Town’ Inaugural Production in New DePaul Theatre – Premieres Wednesday, October 4

The Theatre School at DePaul University is pleased to present “Our Town” as the inaugural production in the new building, located at Racine and Fullerton on the Lincoln Park Campus. Performances will be in the Fullerton Stage theatre, a 250-seat thrust theatre located on the first floor of the school.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” directed by Damon Kiely, premieres Oct. 4 and runs through Oct. 13. 32nd Annual Oktoberfest & Crafts Show – Sunday, October 6

Nearly every space of Marian Catholic High School will be turned into a crafter’s dreamland when the School’s Band Parents Association presents their 32nd Annual Oktoberfest and Crafts Show on Sunday, October 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 100 crafters will fill the school halls and gym with their products. Crafts of all different categories will be available offering a large variety from Christmas items to unique vendors such as homemade pasta and handcrafted soap. Several vendors will be on hand as well to offer favorite products from Green Envee, Pampered Chef, Gold Canyon candles and other great businesses. People will flock to the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey Leadership Center for what has become a local tradition. Authentic and delicious German food will be served such as German potato salad, bratwursts, sausages, sauerkraut in addition to home-made mac and cheese. ‘Phantasmagoria’ Art Exhibit – Opens September 30

PSC is hosting ‘Phantasmagoria: The Imaginations of Kathy Weaver, Sharon Bladholm and John A. Kurtz’ from September 30 through October 31 in the Christopher Art Gallery. Fossil, Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show – October 19 & 20

The Prairie State College (PSC) Natural Science Department is hosting the 44th Annual South Suburban Earth Science Club Fossil, Gem, Mineral, and Jewelry Show Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Prairie Center Gym on PSC’s main campus. The event is co-sponsored by the South Suburban Earth Science Club (SSESC). The annual show is an opportunity for gem and fossil enthusiasts to meet the experts, get a close look at the latest finds, learn about the geological history of the area, and purchase rare gems, fossils, and artifacts from around the world. Scouts have the opportunity to earn their geology badges at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. on both days. Scouts should bring their scout handbooks. ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ – Through October 17

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, an exhibition of Saul Aguirre’s art works entitle ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery through October 17. There will be an artist reception on Wednesday, September 25 from 4 p.m. to 4 p.m. ‘Discusiones de Ninos’ concentrates on the crucial years of child development in a creative way. An exhibition by Joanne Aono entitled ‘1 & One’ will be on display in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery through October 18. There will be an artist reception on Wednesday, October 2 at 12:30 p.m. Ms. Aono studied in the Studios Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and holds a B.F.A. from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The South Suburban Small Business Association (SSBA) is hosting a ‘JumpstART Your Weekend’ event at SSC on Thursday, October 24 from 5:30 p.m. To 7 p.m. This event will showcase the South Suburban Chorale. The ‘JumpstART Your Weekend’ events offer business members of the SSBA n informal introduction to some of the south suburbs’ most fascinating and though-provoking arts organizations. These events are hosting on the first Thursday of the month. The 130-voice South Suburban Chorale has established itself as one of the premiere singing ensembles of the Chicago Southland. Lecture On Civil Rights – Saturday, October 14

Roosevelt University will unveil rare speeches on civil rights and freedom by the late Roosevelt professor St. Clair Drake (above) during an Oct. 14 program and lecture on freedom and the March on Washington. The Drake audio tapes, which haven’t been heard since the late great Chicago sociologist delivered them in 1963, on the centennial of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, are part of a program and lecture entitled “Freedom Then, Freedom Now: The March on Washington and the Forgotten History of Civil Rights” that will be presented by guest speaker and University of Wisconsin History Professor Will Jones. Sponsored by Roosevelt’s St. Clair Drake Center for African and African-American Studies, the event will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in Roosevelt’s 10th floor library, 430 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. It is the first of three lectures being presented this academic year by the Drake Center. Jones is an historian of 20th Century United States and has a particular interest in race, class and work. He has also written books on African-American industrial workers in the Jim Crow South and will discuss his recent acclaimed book on the 1963 March on Washington for jobs and freedom.

Discovered recently at Roosevelt University and available for perusal in the archives of the University’s Murray Green Library, the audio tapes are Drake’s reflections, 100 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, on gains made and challenges that lie ahead for African Americans in pursuit of education and integration. The Drake lecture series is supported by a generous gift from Roosevelt alumnus Robert Johnson and his wife, Rose. Garlic Fest – Saturday, October 5

On Saturday, October 5 from noon to 4 p.m., Thorn Creek Nature Center will hold Garlic Fest, an afternoon of family fun celebrating organically grown garlic with recipes, cooking, crafts, hikes, planting and growing demonstrations, garlic refreshments, live music and garlic galore. Allow the many fragrances and tastes of a wide variety of garlic to fill up your senses as you explore the organic garlic grown on Thorn Creek’s historic farm, delicious baked goods and wonderful treats with garlic baked right into them. The Garlic Market Place will feature over 20 different varieties of garlic for sale to eat through winter or to plant in October.

These unusual garlic varieties are sold for $2 a bulb to benefit the Nature Center. Thorn Creek favorites that grow very well here in the Midwest are the soft-neck, robust flavored Inchellium, the strong tasting hot spicy hard-neck German, and Silver Rose a beautiful long storing variety great for braiding. Free samples of raw garlic with a parsley “chaser”, which is the best way to discriminate between the different varieties, will tickle taste buds. Garlic and organic gardening books, garlic roasters and keepers will also be available. On hand in the market place will be Garlic Gurus Kathy Tovey and Jon Mendelson to answer all your garlic questions especially tips on planting garlic in October. At 2 p.m. join Emily Thiel on a Serendipity Hike- a hike run by the hikers. We’ll walk through the old Camp Pompei exploring as we go along.

Back by popular demand are cooking demonstrations with self-proclaimed Chefs Tim Chappell and Shawn Hamende, two time winners of the Kankakee amateur chef contest. Sample items such as roasted garlic, pear chutney, garlic soup, pesto and much more and let your taste buds be the judge. Demonstrations will occur throughout the day. An original graphite drawing by artist Marikay Peter Whitlock titled “Prairie Chapel” is available for a donation of $75 or more to the Friends of Thorn Creek Woods. All proceeds will benefit the preserve, which was the inspiration for the drawing. Fest bake sale will also feature items with garlic – plus water, coffee & tea.

Visitors can create a garlic braid to take home and learn how to clean garlic. Peruse the handmade soaps, healing salves, bath salts and more of Maureen Chappell’s Herb Basket. Hammered dulcimer musician Jerry Santoni will evoke memories of long-ago with his poignant melodies. Also for sale will be Thorn Creek and Garlic Fest T-shirts. South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish. Cell phone collection sites currently include:

• Bergstein’s NY Deli, 200 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights, IL
• Doyle Designed Salon, 2630 Flossmoor Rd., Flossmoor, IL

The Rotary Club of Park Forest is conducting a used cell phone and accessory collection drive to benefit the families and programs of the South Suburban Family Shelter.
