January 20, 2012: Move to Amend Occupies the Courts

CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—January 12, 2012. Inspired by our friends at Occupy Wall Street, and Dr. Cornel West, Move To Amend is planning bold action to mark the second anniversary of the infamous Citizens United v. FEC decision!

Occupy the Courts will be a one day occupation of Federal courthouses across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., on Friday January 20, 2012.

Here are the facts:

  • In January 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission that money is speech and the more money you have the more free speech are entitled to.
  • Now corporations can spend unlimited sums to influence elections and to control government. Big Corporations are now flooding the electoral process with oceans of anonymous cash. In 94% of elections, the better-financed candidate won. This is corrupt and profoundly undemocratic.
  • Citizens United was backed by a small number of very wealthy groups and individuals who want a two-tier society where they control the country’s wealth and resources. Meanwhile, the 99% are forced to work for stagnating or even declining wages.

In Chicago, participants will gather on Friday, January 20, 11:30 AM at:

Dirksen Federal Courthouse Plaza, 230 South Dearborn St., Chicago

At 1: 00 PM we will march to Occupy Chicago, LaSalle & Jackson.
