Mayor Emanuel and Hyatt Announce More than 60 Information Technology Jobs Moving To Downtown Chicago

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–February 26, 2014.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Hyatt Hotels Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Hoplamazian announced today that the global hospitality company, which is headquartered in Chicago, will relocate more than 60 Information Technology (IT) positions from a suburban location to downtown Chicago. The move will bring more than 60 positions held by both Hyatt associates and its IT vendors to the company’s 200 West Monroe location. These positions range from application support to development.

“We welcome Hyatt’s decision to move these technology positions to downtown Chicago, and we look forward to watching the company continue to grow here,” said Mayor Emanuel. “By increasing the number of IT positions in Chicago, Hyatt continues to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. With its headquarters in Chicago, this move reinforces the company’s commitment to building and growing careers in a city that is known for its strength in information technology and E-Commerce, two critical areas of growth as our economy evolves.”

“Hyatt’s culture is built on collaboration, and we are proud to cultivate talent right here in our hometown of Chicago,” said Hoplamazian. “By bringing this technology team together under one roof, we are furthering an even more creative, collaborative environment that will continue to enhance Chicago’s reputation as a growing force in the information technology space.”

Hyatt, which was recently named a “Top 100 Workplace” by the Chicago Tribune, will now have these IT positions in a flourishing technology community in Chicago, which is home to more than 1,500 digital technology companies that employ more than 40,000 people, an increase of 21 percent since 2013. Built in Chicago also reports that a technology startup is launched in Chicago every 24 hours.

Promoting and enabling greater levels of innovation throughout the regional economy is a key component of Chicago’s Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs, a blueprint for accelerating the economy and adding jobs in Chicago. The Plan was initiated by Mayor Emanuel and is currently being implemented by World Business Chicago.

“Hyatt joins a growing list of companies that recognize Chicago is the premier location to attract world-class technology talent,” said World Business Chicago President Jeff Malehorn. “We are fortunate that Hyatt’s President and CEO Mark Hoplamazian serves on WBC’s board of directors and we look forward to continuing our work with Hyatt as we implement efforts to accelerate growth and bring jobs into the city and region.”

Similar to Hyatt’s move, other companies, including Walgreens, Medline, Grainger, and Motorola Mobility, have relocated their technology divisions to the city in order to gain access to its unique talent pool. Public and private post-secondary educational institutions enroll more than 65,000 students in the Chicago Loop alone, and Chicago is home to two of the world’s top business schools. Additionally, the most recent U.S. Census Bureau report showed Chicago residents over 25 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in computers, math, and statistics increased by 20 percent in 2012 (nationally, this figure increased by 4.6 percent).

The term “Hyatt” is used in this release for convenience to refer to Hyatt Hotels Corporation or one or more of its affiliates.
