Mayor Emanuel Announces UPS Will Create 4,000 New Jobs In Chicagoland Area

Boosting Chicago’s Competitiveness as a National Leader in Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics is a Critical Part of Mayor Emanuel’s Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs; Interview Days to be Held at City Colleges of Chicago on October 18 and October 25

CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—October 8, 2014. Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced that UPS will create more than 4,000 full-time and part-time seasonal jobs in the Chicagoland area as part of a Fall Hiring Initiative. The openings are for a combination of positions, including package handlers, delivery drivers, tractor-trailer divers and driver helpers. Many seasonal employees will have the opportunity for advancements into permanent positions following the 2014 holiday season.

“By bringing together transportation and logistics businesses with Chicago’s trained workforce, we can drive growth in this industry and in the City,” said Mayor Emanuel. “This is an opportunity for UPS to have a direct impact on job creation and growing the Chicago-area economy.”

It is estimated that more than 110,000 transportation, distribution and logistics jobs will be coming to the Chicago region over the next decade. Chicago’s transportation, distribution, and logistics industry accounts for over $20 billion in GRP and 185,000 jobs. The industry is estimated to add jobs at twice the rate of the overall economy through 2020. Estimates suggest that between a quarter and a third of all freight tonnage in the U.S. originates, terminates or passes through the region.

The City of Chicago and City Colleges of Chicago will conduct a series of hiring events to fill the more than 300 delivery drivers and tractor-trailer driver positions. The first of two pre-scheduled interview days will be held on Saturday, October 18 at Truman College at 1145 W. Wilson Ave. from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The second event will be held on Saturday, October 25 from 9:00AM to 2:00 PM at Olive-Harvey College at 10001 S. Woodlawn Ave. These events will focus on filling positions for delivery drivers and tractor-trailer drivers. Additional hiring events may be added based on need and interested candidates should check the UPS jobs website for updates.

To prepare students for in-demand careers in ground, air, and rail transport, multi-modal distribution and logistics, in February 2012, Mayor Emanuel along with Gov. Quinn and City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl Hyman announced the construction of a Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) Center at Olive-Harvey College, the first comprehensive TDL education center in the state.

“Through our College to Careers plan, City Colleges is working with UPS and other leaders in the TDL sector to prepare Chicagoans to seize the 110,000 jobs coming to our region in this field over the next decade,” said Chancellor Cheryl Hyman. “Not only do we offer a revamped TDL curriculum at Olivec-Harvey, but we are fortunate to work with employer partners who are providing real-world learning and career opportunities such as this.”

All qualified candidates interested in applying for full-time delivery driver and tractor-trailer driver positions must pre-register by calling 708-387-4683, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Applicants for these positions must be at a minimum 21 years old with two years of all-weather driving experience. Up to 140 interviews for delivery drivers and tractor-trailer drivers will be conducted on-site. Only pre-registered candidates will be interviewed.

Candidates who are interested in package handler or driver helper positions should apply online at www.upsjobs.com/chicago for an opportunity to interview onsite at UPS locations.

The new hires will fill positions in 11 Chicagoland UPS operating locations including two in Chicago at the O’Hare International Airports Facility at 616 South Access Road and the Jefferson Street Facility at 1400 South Jefferson Street, as well as the Chicago Area Consolidation Hub at 1 UPS Way in Hodgkins, IL.

In 2013, Mayor Emanuel launched the Supply-chain Innovation Network of Chicago (SINC), to focus on increasing the City’s competitive advantage in supply chain, transportation, and logistics. Chicago is the only city in the nation where six of the major North American railroads intersect.
