Park Forest Library Announces Kick-Off of the Big Read in Park Forest/Olympia Fields


Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)–February 18, 2010. Park Forest Public Library will launch its Big Read program in celebration of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett with a kickoff on March 6, 2010 at 2 pm at the Park Forest Village Hall. The Big Read in Park Forest/Olympia Fields is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Park Forest Public Library.

The kick-off event will feature a lecture by Rosemary Johnsen, Assistant Professor of English at Governors State University and a reading of the first chapter by Judge Funderburk. The first book discussion will follow.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Support for The Big Read is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Transportation for The Big Read is provided by Ford.

Park Forest/Olympia Fields is one of 268 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read from September 2009-June 2010. To date, the NEA has funded more than 800 Big Read programs in the nation’s towns and cities. From March 6 to April 17, 2010, our community will celebrate The Maltese Falcon with a full calendar of events including a Murder Mystery Event on March 13 at 2 pm at Dining on the Green in Park Forest, a Jazz Concert on April 11 at 4 pm at Prairie State College, and a Closing Program with lectures by Chicago Outfit author Michael Allen Dymmoch and detective genre specialist Gary Warren Niebuhr on April 17 at 2 pm at Park Forest Village Hall.
