Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement On President’s Decision to Reject the Keystone XL Pipeline Project

WASHINGTON, DC –-(ENEWSPF)–November 6, 2015.  Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced that he would reject the Keystone XL Pipeline project:

“I strongly support the President’s decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. As I have consistently said, Keystone XL is all risk, no reward, and I have consistently opposed its construction.

“The Keystone XL pipeline would have allowed the full development of the Alberta tar sands, which would generate almost half of the total carbon pollution the world can produce before reaching catastrophic and irreversible climate change. The pipeline would have pushed nearly a million barrels of oil each day directly through the Ogallala Aquifer – threatening 30 percent of the United States irrigation water and drinking water for millions of Americans.

“The pipeline would not have promoted American energy independence – it would have transported Canadian oil to Texas for refining and export. Nor would it have reduced gas prices nationwide, and it might have increased them in Illinois.

“I hope and expect that the Keystone XL’s rejection will allow us to refocus our efforts on public water infrastructure, where hundreds of billions of dollars of investment is needed and many more good-paying pipeline jobs can be supported. It should also remind us that there are plenty of aging and leaking existing oil pipelines, and we should put people to work repairing those.

“I’d like to thank the millions of Americans all over the country – from college students, to Native American populations, to farmers and ranchers, to leading environmental advocacy organizations – who made this decision not only possible, but obvious. Their tireless efforts have allowed all Americans to take a big sigh of relief.”
