Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on Supreme Court Emergency Stay to keep Abortion Clinics Open in Texas

CHICAGO –(ENEWSPF)—June 30, 2015. On Monday, the Supreme Court issued an emergency stay delaying the enforcement of a Texas law that would have forced the closure of abortion clinics across the state. The law is delayed while the case against the legislation is appealed to the Supreme Court.  Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response:

“I applaud the Supreme Court for its sensible decision in Whole Woman’s Health v Cole to prevent implementation of a Texas law that would have devastating impacts on women’s health and safety.  The Texas law would have forced most of the state’s clinics to shut their doors, preventing women from being able to get safe, Constitutionally-protected abortion services.

This is a victory for the women of Texas but it could be only a temporary reprieve.  When, as expected, the Supreme Court hears this case next year, I hope it will once again rule in favor of the plaintiffs by maintaining women’s access to abortions.”
