Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on the Charleston Shooting at Emanuel AME Church

Washington, DC –(ENEWSPF)—June 18, 2015. “I’m horrified, saddened and angered by the church shooting in Charleston, SC that took the lives of nine people. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all the victims of this terrible shooting. This is a time for solidarity and mourning.

The gunman has been arrested, but that is only the first step toward justice. I am pleased to see Attorney General Loretta Lynch swiftly leading the federal investigation into this awful incident – another very important step.

But it is past time for the Congress to stop the easy access to guns so we can prevent these massacres from happening.  I fully support enacting sensible gun safety measures so we can protect our families from senseless gun violence. While investigations are ongoing into what type of gun was used in this shooting, this is likely another case of a criminal accessing a deadly weapon that he had no legitimate reason to have.

The level of hatred and intolerance displayed by this alleged murderer is completely unacceptable. I am ready and willing to join together with all those who support gun safety legislation to prevent these horrific incidents from occurring again.”
