Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 21, 2013 – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on voting no on the Ryan budget:
“I voted against Rep. Paul Ryan’s Republican budget today because the Ryan Republican budget reflects everything that the American people rejected in the last election. The Ryan budget asks nothing from the wealthiest Americans and rich corporations that ship jobs and profits overseas, while it turns Medicare into a voucher program and slashes investments that create jobs. The Ryan budget would cost 2 million jobs in 2014 alone, according to the Economic Policy Institute.
“Inequality is at its highest point since the Great Depression, and yet this Ryan budget would make it worse. According to the Tax Policy Center, households making more than $3.3 million would get an average tax cut of $1.2 million and those making less than $22,000 would get $40, and a third of them would get no tax cut at all. And at the same time it would give huge tax cuts to the wealthy, it would cut critical support programs for seniors and the poor, including Medicaid and food stamps.
“I am disappointed that an alternative I introduced with the Congressional Progressive Caucus did not pass. There is a better way. The CPC’s Back to Work Budget would create nearly 7 million good jobs, bring unemployment down to 5% in three years, protect Social Security and strengthen the critical benefits of Medicaid and Medicare. The American people saying they want more action to create good jobs. That should be what Congress is doing this month. Instead, House Republicans have passed the Ryan budget, which is pure March Madness.”
