Congresswoman Robin Kelly, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, released this statement following House passage of Protecting Girls Access to Education Act (H.R. 2408):

“I’m extremely excited to have our bill approved by the U.S. House. Together, Congressman Steve Chabot and I were able to craft a common sense, bipartisan bill that helps ensure that every girl has an opportunity to go to school and learn, no matter her current circumstance.

I’d like to thank the UN Foundation and its Girls Up! initiative for their support and leadership in advocating for this bill.  Together, we will help young women build a better future for themselves, their families and their countries by ensuring they can go to school and learn.

When girls are empowered through education, they are less likely to be trafficked, enslaved or radicalized by terrorist organizations.  By supporting young girls and their families, we are making this a safer, more secure world for all of us.

I look forward to quick passage of this bill by the Senate.”
