SPRINGFIELD—(ENEWSPF)—April 16, 2013. In an effort to save the state money, legislation supported by State Representative Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights) to renew pay restrictions in state officials and prohibit increases in reimbursements passed the Illinois House last week.
“Now more than ever, it is important for all elected officials to lead by example and reduce spending,” said DeLuca. “I voted to cut my own pay because it is the right thing to do. By cutting our own pay, it sets an example that we are serious about being a more fiscally responsible state.”
House Bill 1441, which passed through the House with bipartisan support, frees salaries and reimbursements for members of the General Assembly and forces them to take 12 unpaid furlough days in the next fiscal year. The bill also prohibits a cost of living adjustment for any official whose pay was set by the Compensation Review Board. This includes members of the General Assembly, state’s attorneys, constitutional officers, and several appointed officials. The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration.
“This is the fifth year in a row I have voted to cut my own pay,” said DeLuca. “We are all working together to cut out-of-control spending and help get this great state back on track. This is a symbolic step towards fiscal responsibility.”
