In 18-4 Vote, Banking Committee Approves Kirk-Menendez Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015; Bill Would Impose New Sanctions if No Deal by July 2015 Deadline
WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)–January 29, 2015. U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today released the following statement after the Senate Banking Committee approved S. 269, the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015, by a vote of 18-4:
“With an overwhelming 18-to-4 bipartisan vote, the Senate Banking Committee today showed that the Senate stands ready to pass the Kirk-Menendez legislation. Now is the time to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons and launching a nuclear war in the Middle East.”
The following 18 Senators voted to send the Kirk-Menendez legislation to the Senate Floor: in addition to Senators Kirk and Menendez, Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), David Vitter (R-La.), Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.).
Background:
On Tuesday, Senator Kirk, along with U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and 14 other senators, introduced S. 269. Known as the Kirk-Menendez bill, this bipartisan legislation will impose crippling economic pressure on Iran if international negotiations do not yield a final nuclear deal that safeguards America’s national security by June 30, 2015, and would create a congressional review period of 30 continuous session days in the event of a final deal. The negotiations with Iran, which involve the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany, were extended in November 2014 with a deadline of June 30, 2015.
