Statement by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky: New Data Shows Affordable Care Act Helped Seniors Save $8.9 billion on Prescription Drugs

Washington, DC (November 26, 2013) – Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement on the new data that shows Obamacare helped seniors save $8.9 billion on prescription drugs nationwide:

“According to new data released today by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, seniors and persons with disabilities in Illinois saved $333 million on their prescription drug costs, since Obamacare was enacted in 2010. By closing the gap in prescription drug coverage known as the donut hole, we are making access to prescription drugs more affordable –ensuring that seniors and people with disabilities can afford to get the medications they need. And every year, those savings will grow.

“During the first 10 months of 2013 in Illinois, 114,749 seniors and people with disabilities, who reached the donut hole, saved $91,914,648, an average of $801 per beneficiary. And the new health law is helping in other ways as well. In 2014, there will be no increases in the Part B premium or deductible. We’re saving money for seniors, people with disabilities and their families – and we’ve extended the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by nearly 10 years thanks to the health care law’s successful efforts to keep cost growth low.”
