Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–April 17, 2013 – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement following the failure of the Senate to break a filibuster on a bill to require background checks for gun purchasers by a vote of 54 to 46:
“Today is not the end of the debate to protect our children and our communities from gun violence. Those who have come together to push for action – mothers and grandmothers, doctors and nurses, law enforcement officials, mayors and most gun owners – will continue their efforts and they will be successful. I am proud to stand with them.
“Once again, we have seen a minority of the Senate vote to prevent majority rule and to block the will of the American public. Over 90 percent of Americans – including a majority of gun owners – support universal background checks. The bipartisan Manchin-Toomey amendment would have expanded background checks and prevented guns from getting into the hands of those who should not have them. It would have saved lives and it is shameful that it has been blocked by a minority of senators by the use of the filibuster
“Those who have lost children at Sandy Hook, in Chicago and elsewhere – and those who want to keep their children safe from gun violence – are not going away. We will continue to organize and to mobilize until we are successful.”
