Statement by Rep. Jan Schakowsky on UN Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change Report

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)–September 27, 2013 – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the UN’s climate change report which concludes that the rise in global temperatures is the result of human activity:

“This report confirms what scientists have been telling us for decades that climate change is real and is a result of human activity. Our window to take action is rapidly closing, and we must work to reduce emissions and support clean energy technologies so that we can lead the world away from preventable disaster. This 113th Congress is in the privileged position of being at the right place at the right time and actually prevent environmental catastrophe. And yet the Republican majority has gone the opposite way, denying global warming, defunding clean energy technologies and even demanding that the government be prevented from regulating greenhouse gasses. They are taking our country and our planet in a dangerous direction.

“I support the President’s Climate Action Plan and I will not give up urging my Republican colleagues to work collaboratively to address this crisis and to take immediate and meaningful action on climate change.”

Today, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its latest report on the threat of global warming. The report concludes that there is near certainty that the rise in global temperatures since the mid-20th century has been the result of human activity, and that the world will reach a tipping point in the battle over climate change by 2040.
