CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 6, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today issued a statement regarding Illinois servicemember Sergeant Robert J. Miller posthumously receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts while serving in Afghanistan.
“There is no greater hero than one who is willing to lay down his or her life for friends and country,” said Governor Quinn. “Robert Miller did not live a long life, but he lived a very purposeful life. With his actions on Jan. 25, 2008 in Barikowt, Afghanistan, he saved the lives of the members of his Special Forces team and 15 Afghan soldiers.”
“As we in Illinois mourn the loss of this young hero, we should also take pride knowing that he was a graduate of Illinois’ public schools. The lessons he learned from his parents and at Wheaton North High School helped develop a true American hero. We will forever honor this young man’s bravery under fire and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his nation.”
The family of Sergeant Miller received the posthumous Medal of Honor award during a ceremony at the White House today.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. It is presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress.
President Abraham Lincoln signed the legislation that created the Congressional Medal of Honor during the early years of the Civil War.
