WASHINGTON, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)–April 18, 2013. U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) released the following statement yesterday regarding the Senate vote on the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act:
“I am disappointed that the Senate could not come together to support a bipartisan proposal that would reduce gun violence and protect law-abiding gun owners, but American voters are the ultimate judge of today’s result.”
BACKGROUND:
Today, Senator Kirk met with the families of Newtown affected by the gun violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A photo of the meeting can be found here. Senator Kirk, along with Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are the lead co-sponsors of the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act, which aims to close loopholes in the existing background check system, reduce gun violence across the US, and save lives while defending law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights. The Senate failed to pass the measure by a vote of 54-46.
