Statement from Senator Mark Kirk on Meeting with Families Affected by Gun Violence

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–February 13, 2013.  U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today released a statement after meeting with families affected by gun violence:

“Today, I sat down with Illinois families who lost loved ones due to senseless gun violence.  I asked Cleopatra Pendleton, mother of 15-year-old Hadiya who was shot and killed by gang gunfire in Chicago, for permission to name anti-illegal gun trafficking legislation after her daughter.  I reiterated that one of my top priorities this year is to pass legislation that will dry up the supply of illegal weapons to dangerous drug gangs who are committing these senseless acts of violence.  For Hadiya and thousands of other victims of gun violence, we must break through the typical Washington process and actually get something done that will save lives.”

BACKGROUND:

Senator Kirk, along with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) are the lead co-sponsors of S. 179, which would, for the first time, make gun trafficking a federal crime and end straw purchases of illegal weapons which will dry up their supply to dangerous drug gangs.
