Steger, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Sales continue at the Steger Kmart. The store is scheduled to close for good on November 25, 2018. The pharmacy closes tomorrow.

The parking lot was full perhaps as it would have been in the mid-90s or earlier. One shopper eNews Park Forest encountered thought the store was closing tomorrow, Monday, September 24. She was expecting better sales.

The store remains open until November 25, however. Today shoes and a number of other items were on sale for 40% off. Bed sheets sold at 25% off. Tools ranged from 10% to 15% off.

As the shelves continue to empty, the sales will likely increase. Today, however were still a fair number of items in each department, including tools, towels, bed sheets, pillows. Coffee makers were all but gone, as were higher end electronic items like flat-screen televisions.

The Steger Kmart began offering higher-percentage sales on appliances, those that remained, on Sunday.

Clothing items remained, but size offerings were sparse. Those in the medium-to-large range for adult men’s shirts should find something to wear.

The store is one of “46 unprofitable stores” Sears Holdings, the parent company of Sears and Kmart, announced would be closing. The company’s statement, released in August, said in part, “As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline Sears Holdings’ operations, strengthen our capital position and focus on our best stores, this week the company informed associates at 46 unprofitable stores that we will be closing these stores in November 2018. We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which is a critical component to our integrated retail transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed.”

The statement continued, “Eligible associates will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.”

But there aren’t many Kmart or Sears stores left in the area anymore. Sears in Matteson closed in the spring of 2012 years after leaving Park Forest. Lincoln Mall closed in 2014 per the order of Cook County Judge Thomas Condon.

Still, Sears Holdings encourages customers to “use the store locator function on our web sites to find the location of their nearest Kmart and Sears stores.”

Good luck with that.
