Jamie-Miller

Chicago Heights, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Jaime Miller was recently hired as the director of enrollment services at Prairie State College (PSC).

In her new position, Miller provides leadership in enrollment, recruitment, registration, retention, and records. Her primary responsibility is to facilitate a smooth enrollment process for new and returning students while assuring student-centered service is provided.

Prior to coming to PSC, Miller held two different administrative positions at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She most recently served as the assistant director of the Academic Assistance Program where she advised and counseled students, performed program assessment and reporting, and supervised a staff of 15. In addition to her academic experience, she was an instructional designer for Walgreen Corporation.

“Through my personal and professional experiences I have developed a true passion for helping students,” said Miller. “That is why I am excited to have the opportunity to continue my work in higher education by serving the students of PSC and the community it represents.”

Miller has a Bachelor of Science in Food, Farm, and Financial Management and a Masters of Education in Human Resource Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

“Coming from the south-side of Chicago and later attending and working with underrepresented students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jaime is aware of the opportunities and challenges facing both traditional and non-traditional students,” said Shawn L. Govan, dean of counseling and academic advising. “She is an excellent addition to the college.”

PSC Offers Spanish Courses for Working Professionals

If your job regularly puts you in contact with people who speak predominantly Spanish, communication can be difficult. Prairie State College has a solution to help bridge the communication gap with the Command Spanish® program.

Command Spanish® is a customized language program for non-Spanish-speaking individuals who interact every day with Spanish speakers in the workplace. The program teaches English-speaking employees to communicate with Spanish-speaking co-workers and customers with key phrases and words that are relevant to their specific occupation.

These self-paced courses require no prior knowledge of Spanish. Students can register and begin the courses at any time, accessing the course for up to four months. A downloadable certificate of completion is available upon finishing the course.

“Command Spanish® courses offer a flexible learning option for professionals who would like to learn Spanish to communicate better at their jobs,” said Frank Novak, operations specialist at the college’s Matteson Area Center. “Students can start and stop any lesson at any time to fit their schedules.”

Command Spanish® online courses include Spanish for construction supervisors, financial institutions, hospital nurses, law enforcement officers, library personnel, medical office nurses, pharmacy personnel, physicians, real estate sales, and school teachers.

For employers interested in enrolling 10 or more employees in a Command Spanish® course, a classroom option is available at a discounted rate.

For more information about Command Spanish®, contact Novak at (708) 709-7839 or visit matteson.prairiestate.edu.

PSC also offers additional non-credit courses at its Matteson Area Center and locations throughout the south suburbs. For a complete listing of courses, visit matteson.prairiestate.edu or pick up a copy of the printed non-credit schedule, Personal and Professional, which was mailed to district households in December.
