Park Forest Police Report – July 14, 2008

Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— Editor’s Note: We continue our reporting on news from police reports. Besides covering the many stories from around Park Forest that otherwise might go unnoticed, we want to bring more complete coverage of police reports than is reported by other local media.

An arrest does not mean that a person is guilty. All those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty. It is the policy of eNews Park Forest to not remove items in the public record from publication. If your name is listed in the police reports, we will only add information relevant to the final disposition of the case at hand, e.g. "Mr. Smith was subsequently acquitted," or "All charges against Mr. Smith were subsequently dropped." We will do so upon receiving and verifying proof of such disposition.

We will always include some introductory comments before the first item. While everything that follows is a matter of public record, we do not believe it is necessary to have names on page one.

A juvenile was arrested on July 3 and issued a municipal citation charging resisting a peace officer when police were dispatched to Logan Park at 10 p.m. to investigate a report of a fireworks disturbance.

Jeremy J. Kotash, 33, 211 Washington St., Park Forest, was arrested on July 4 and charged with domestic battery when police were called to that address to investigate a report of domestic battery.

Detectives on patrol just before 9:20 p.m. on July 4 in the 400 block of Lakewood Blvd., Central Park, observed a 19-year-old man allegedly smoking a cigar blunt. The man was released with no charges pending status of results from the State Police Crime Lab.

Police were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Somonauk St. on July 5 to investigate a report of a residential burglary. Police observed a shattered window. Various food items were reported stolen.

A juvenile was arrested and charged with a curfew violation when an officer on patrol just before 3 a.m. on July 5, traveling eastbound in the first block of Westwood Dr., observed the youth riding a bicycle.

An officer was dispatched to the Park Forest Police Department on July 6 to investigate a report of domestic trouble. There were no arrests.

Officer Lee Elliot was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Shabbona Dr. to investigate a report of criminal defacement on July 6 at 5:41 a.m. Someone had spray painted the letters “GDN” on the driver side window of a vehicle parked at the residence. Officer Elliot also observed numerous gang symbols in white spray paint on the roadway in front of the residence. At 6:56 a.m., Officer Elliot was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Shabbona Drive to investigate a similar report. A resident observed what appeared to be gang-related graffiti in the street. Officer Elliot observed gang symbols and a derogatory phrase that had been spray-painted on the streets. At 7:40 a.m., Officer Elliot observed red spray paint with gang symbols in the driveway of a residence in the 400 block of Navajo St.

An officer was dispatched to the Park Forest Police Department on July 6 to investigate a telephone harassment complaint. Police continue to investigate.

A green and silver Columbia Northway men’s mountain bike was reported stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Forest Blvd. on July 7.

Police were dispatched to the first block of Indianwood Blvd. on July 7 to investigate a report of a found gun. A resident reported that she was cleaning up around her residence and parking lot area when she found a revolver under her car. The .22 caliber revolver was entered into evidence to be sent to the crime lab for processing.

An officer was dispatched to the Park Forest Police Department on July 7 to investigate reports of domestic battery. Police continue to investigate.

Aaron M. Hawkins, 19, 10 Dunlap St., Park Forest, and Adrian A. Austin, 20, 3352 Western Ave., Park Forest, and Tyrice D. Carter, 19, 193 Lester Rd., Park Forest, were arrested and charged with resisting a peace officer when police were dispatched to the 3600 block of Western regarding a burglary in progress. A Philips 27-inch screen color television set valued at $200, and a Philips stereo system valued at $200, and four speakers were among the items allegedly stolen from a residence.

A Sony 55-inch flat screen television valued at $2500 and an Onkyo surround sound system valued at $500 were reported stolen from a residence in the 300 block of Sauk Trail on July 7. Police have suspect information.

Ronald B. Taylor, 54, 810 Pin Oak Ln., University Park, was arrested on July 8 and charged with disorderly conduct when police were dispatched to the Park Forest Police Department in reference to a stolen motor vehicle report. According to police, Taylor said his car had been stolen. When asked about some inconsistencies in his story, Taylor admitted that his car had not been stolen, according to police.

Police were dispatched to the first block of Well Court on July 8 to investigate a report of an identity theft. Police continue to investigate.

An officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Kentucky St. to investigate a burglar alarm going off. The officer observed that a door frame had been shattered and a door window was also shattered. Nothing appeared to have been taken.

Police were dispatched to the first block of South Arbor Trail on July 9 to investigate a report of a domestic disturbance. There were no arrests, but charges may be pending.

An officer responded to the 21800 block of Central Park to investigate a report of harassing phone calls.

Christopher E. Hart, 258 Marquette St., Park Forest, was arrested on July 9 and issued a municipal citation charging criminal trespass to land when police were dispatched to a business in the first block of South Orchard in response to a report of a disturbance.

Police were dispatched to the Aqua Center, 30 North Orchard, on July 10 regarding a report of theft. Twenty-five dollars in US currency and some credit cards were reported stolen from a wallet.

Between $50 and $60 were reported stolen from a lockbox at a business in the 200 block of Nashua St. on July 10.

BBs were shot through a kitchen window of a residence in the first block of Oak Ln. on July 10.

An officer was dispatched to the Park Forest Police Department on July 11 regarding a complaint of domestic battery. There were no arrests.

Maurice D. Shelby, 73, 132 Algonquin St., Park Forest, was arrested on July 11 and charged with one felony count of driving while license revoked, illegal operation of a sound amplification system and failure to wear a seatbelt when an officer on patrol traveling northbound on Western Ave. heard an extremely loud car stereo coming from a vehicle traveling southbound on Western. The officer, Commander Winfrey, observed that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. According to police, the loud stereo was clearly audible in excess of 150 feet. Winfrey performed a U-turn and was able to catch up to the vehicle as it turned into the parking lot of a business in the 2500 block of Western. Shelby immediately stated that he did not have a license, according to police. According to police, Shelby’s license was revoked on May 16, 2007 following a DUI conviction. That revocation is still in effect, according to police. In addition, Shelby was convicted of driving while license revoked on September 20, 2007, according to police.

Demetrius L. Williams, 23, 1649 Heindorn, Westchester, IL, was arrested on July 11 and charged with domestic battery, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, and criminal damage to property when police were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Winona in reference to a report of domestic battery.
