Passenger Arrested on Drug Charges During Traffic Stop

Park Forest, IL–(ENEWSPF)– A Park Forest man visiting home from college was arrested last week when a car he was passenger in was pulled over because of inoperable taillights, according to police.

On Sunday, March 1, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle with inoperable taillights turn north on Central Park Avenue from Westgate Drive, according to police. The driver of the vehicle was given a municipal citation charging inoperable taillights. Police say the driver gave police permission to search the vehicle. Police conducted a protective pat-down of the driver and a second passenger with negative results. According to police, Officer Rimovsy conducted a protective pad-down on Charles E. Broughton, 20, 322 Winnebago St., Park Forest, and felt a bulge from the outside of his left-front pocket. Officer Rimovsky recovered five clear plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for the presumptive presence of cannabis, according to police.

While at the Park Forest Police Department, Officer Rimovsky conducted an inventory of Broughton’s property and recovered $418 which was located on his person, rolled up tightly in a rubber band, according to police.

Detectives Busse and Obremski spoke with Broughton in reference to this incident as well as the $418 United States currency. Police say Broughton told them that he had bought four or five bags of weed in Champaign in order to bring it home for the weekend. Detectives then went to his parent’s home on Winnebago Street where he had been staying for the weekend, and were given permission to search the room in an attempt to locate further contraband. Detective Obremski located a digital scale inside a blue backpack. On the scale was residue of a green leafy substance, suspect cannabis, according to police. Detectives further located two small clear Ziploc baggies, each containing suspect cannabis residue, inside the front pants pocket of a pair of jeans lying on Broughton’s bed, according to police.

Broughton was arrested on March 1 and charged with possession of cannabis.
