Chicago Heights, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Prairie State College is offering free General Education Development (GED®) classes for the high school equivalency exam. GED® preparation classes are open to those at least 16 years of age who are out of school but have not completed high school. A GED® certificate provides the opportunity to open new doors in higher education and pursue goals for personal and professional enrichment. A GED® certificate is accepted as a substitute for a high school diploma.
Prairie State College offers GED® preparation classes both on-and off-campus. Classes begin the week of March 30. The classes prepare students to take the GED® Tests by covering the areas of study that are on the exam. Enrolling in GED® classes requires an orientation and registration/placement assessment session, which takes approximately four hours.
Orientation and placement assessment for on-campus classes will be held on Monday, February 23 at 4:30 p.m.; Friday, March 6 at 9:30 a.m.; Monday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m.; and Friday, March 13 at 9:30 a.m. Placement assessment for on-campus classes will be held in the Adult Training & Outreach Center (ATOC) located on the college’s main campus at 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights. Parking is available in Lot D off Vollmer Road.
Placement assessment and registration for off-campus classes are held at God Can Ministries, located at 1100 Greenwood Ave., Ford Heights, on Thursday, March 19 at 11 a.m.; the McConathy Public Library, located at 21737 Jeffrey Ave., Sauk Village, on Friday, March 20 at 11 a.m.; the Chicago Heights Public Library, located at 25 W. 15th St., Chicago Heights, on Tuesday, March 24 at 11 a.m.; Aunt Martha’s Youth Service, located at 233 W. Joe Orr Rd., Chicago Heights, on Wednesday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m.; and Crete-Monee High School, located at 1515 W. Exchange St., Crete, on Wednesday, March 25 at 5 p.m.

In accordance with the Stevens Amendment, the grant-funded portion of Adult Education and the Family Literacy program at Prairie State College for Fiscal Year 2009 is 29 percent financed with federal funds totaling $190,947.
