Park Forest, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Applications for eight Illinois General Assembly Scholarships are now available for students residing in the 38th Legislative District of State Representative Al Riley, D-Park Forest. Applications must be returned by 4 p.m., April 9, to Rep. Riley’s office, located at 600 Holiday Plaza Drive, Suite 535, Matteson. Students applying must live in the 38th District and plan to attend an Illinois public university.
Representative Al Riley awards six individual one-year tuition waivers. Waivers are available for attendance at the University of Illinois (any campus), enrollment in the UIC- B.A. Program in Public Administration and any other Illinois public universities including Chicago State, Eastern Illinois, Governors State, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Northeastern Illinois, Southern Illinois (both campuses) and Western Illinois universities.
Each waiver is good for one full year of tuition, including summer sessions. This scholarship does not waive student fees, housing, or book expenses.
The General Assembly scholarships are only accepted at the University of Illinois and state universities listed above. Private colleges ,community colleges and colleges outside of the State of Illinois are not eligible.
Requirements
Participants must live in the 38th District and plan to attend any of the Illinois public universities listed above. Proof of residency is best determined by a voter registration card, which can be obtained at most local libraries or Village Halls. Participants unable to provide a voters registration card can submit a phone, gas, or electric bill as proof of residency.
A copy of the applicants high school or college transcript is required as well as two letters of recommendation: one from a high school/college counselor and one from another source such as a teacher, school official, activity leader, or employer.
Each scholarship winner is required to sign and notarize a confidentiality waiver verifying his or her address. This will be sent to students after scholarships have been awarded.
Criteria
Students will be judged on academic achievement, community involvement, school activities, personal essay and financial need.
One available scholarship will be reserved for students interested in an inaugural bachelor of arts program in public administration at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Another scholarship will be administered by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Theta Mu Lambda Chapter, and a third will be administered by the Abby Foundation.
