CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–April 7, 2014. Prairie State College (PSC) recently named two to vice president positions with the college. Craig Schmidt was named vice president, community and economic development, and Dr. Marie Hansel was named vice president, academic affairs.
As vice president, community and economic development, Schmidt plans, organizes, and implements a comprehensive program of adult, continuing, and community education, as well as contractual training, which is responsible to the current and emerging needs of the business, industrial, human service, professional, and general adult population of the PSC district. He will also provide leadership for developing curricular, scheduling, and financial support responses to identified community needs.
Schmidt comes to PSC from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, where he was director, conference services, education and administrative services. Before being named to that post, he had served as manager, education and training services; senior manager, education and training services; and then director, education and training services. Prior to his work with Blue Cross Blue Shield, he had worked at PSC as manager, community instructional center and community services, and then director of the Business and Community Education Center (now Conference Center) and corporate education and training. He also has served as a PSC instructor in English as a second language and introduction to computers. Before his first term at PSC, he had worked as a general manager of McDonald’s Restaurants of Coles County and district coordinator for Norrell Services.
Schmidt holds an associate degree in business administration from Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., a bachelor’s degree in economics from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill., and an MBA from Governors State University in University Park, Ill.
As vice president, academic affairs, Hansel is the chief academic officer of the college, and is responsible for providing executive leadership in the curriculum, instructional, and educational services of the college, as well as promoting the professional development and growth of the faculty. She also provides leadership and administrative direction over academic matters within the college in the divisions Liberal Arts, Business, Mathematics and Science, Health and Industrial Technology, Library and Instructional Services, and the Student Success Center.
Hansel has been interim vice president, academic affairs at PSC since 2013. Prior to being named to that position, she had been dean of health and industrial technology and director of nursing at PSC since 2010. Until that time, she was associate professor of nursing and chair/coordinator of health professions. Prior to coming to PSC, she served as a clinical educator and research nurse with St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights, Ill., and preceptor for graduate nursing students at Governors State University, Purdue University Calumet Campus, North Park College, and Harrisburg School of Enterstomal Therapy. She also served as a staff nurse surgical floor team leader, staff nurse for Adult Oncology/Hematology, ET Nurse/WOCN, and finally oncology clinical nurse specialist nurse navigator at St. James Hospital and Health Centers.
She has an associate degree in nursing from PSC, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Governors State University in University Park, Ill., a master’s degree in nursing from Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Ind., and a DNP degree from Governors State University.
“We are pleased that these two highly qualified individuals have agreed to accept these positions on our campus,” said PSC President Dr. Terri Winfree. “Their expertise in their fields and vast experience in the community college setting will benefit the faculty, staff, and students at PSC, as well as everyone in the PSC community,” she added.
