Earth Week Celebration Begins at Prairie State College on April 22


CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–April 17, 2013.  Prairie State College (PSC) is hosting several events to celebrate Earth Week from Monday, April 22 through Saturday, April 27. All events during the week are free and open to the public, and will be held on the PSC main campus, located at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

On Monday, April 22, from 1 to 2 p.m., the program “Cooking with Local Foods,” will be presented by Adrian Martino and Marco Caso of Fratellos in the Conference Center Rotunda. From 3 to 4 p.m., there will be a tree planting ceremony, featuring a special poem reading by the Earth Day Poetry Contest winner. Participants should meet in the Conference Center Rotunda. In the event of rain, an alternative date has been scheduled on Thursday, April 25.

On Tuesday, April 23, a Green Vendor Fair, featuring more than 20 green vendors, will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Atrium. Additionally, a program, “It’s Easy Wearing Green Fashion Show: Eco-friendly trends for pets and their humans,” will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Atrium, and a community discussion panel, “How is our local community responding to and stimulating the green economy?” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Conference Center Auditorium.

Events on Wednesday, April 24, include, “Greening Your Body,” presented by Jan Dowell from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Atrium, and a nature preserve clean up from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. A rain date for the clean up has been slated for Thursday, April 25.

Programs scheduled for Thursday, April 25 include a noon to 2 p.m. program, “Jobs in Energy Efficiency,” presented by Will Baker of the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, held in the PSC Conference Center; “Jim Nesci’s Cold Blooded Creatures: Conservation Through Education,” scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Atrium; and a movie presentation of “Dr. Suess’ The Lorax,” scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Center Heritage Bank Room.

The week long celebration will conclude with a community recycling drive, co-sponsored with SouthSTAR Services’ EcoSafe Processors, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27, in Parking Lot C. Among the items being collected are E-waste, batteries, paint, light bulbs, clothes, and shoes.

“SouthSTAR has a truly inspiring initiative, providing people with disabilities the training and skills necessary to work in the green economy,” said Allessandra Cairo, PSC sustainability coordinator.

“This year’s Earth Week events are sure to impress. We’ve covered it all from eco-friendly trends for pets and their humans to Bubba the Alligator teaching kids about the importance of conservation,” Caro added. “I’m really excited so many vendors and community members pulled together to make Earth Week happen. It is sure to be a fun, exciting and educational experience for everyone,” she said.
