Governor Pat Quinn Statement on Tentative Agreement to End Waukegan Teacher Strike, Return Students to Classrooms

State Education Chief Worked Overnight to Reach Common Ground, Students Heading Back to School on Monday

CHICAGO –-(ENEWSPF)–October 30, 2014.  Governor Pat Quinn yesterday directed Illinois State Board of Education Chairman Gery Chico to work with Waukegan School District 60 to reach a resolution in their ongoing negotiations. Late Wednesday, leadership from the teachers and school board announced a tentative agreement that will allow students to return to school on Monday. A ratification vote will take place today. The Governor issued the below statement:

“Less than 24 hours ago, I directed Illinois State Board of Education Chairman Gery Chico to work with both teachers’ leadership and school district officials to reach a fair resolution to get kids back in the classroom. I’m pleased to announce that they’re getting the job done.

“Last night’s tentative agreement is a victory for the students, parents, teachers, administration and community of Waukegan. I commend our teachers’ representatives and school district officials for working around the clock in good faith to find common ground.

“There are many tough challenges we face from the local level to the state and the federal levels. This agreement shows what can be accomplished by coming to the table and working together to reach an agreement that is fair to our students, our teachers, and taxpayers.

“I’d like to thank our teachers and school board officials for working together to ensure eager students can return to their classrooms starting Monday after this is ratified.”
