Governor Quinn Names Two New Members to Illinois Student Assistance Commission

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–May 19, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today named Kym Hubbard and Miguel Del Valle to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Del Valle will serve as a member of the commission, and Hubbard will serve as its chair. Today’s actions come as the Governor works to bring a fresh approach to the board charged with increasing the affordability and accessibility of college in Illinois – one of Governor Quinn’s top priorities.

“Kym Hubbard and Miguel Del Valle both bring a fresh approach and a lifetime of public and private sector experience to this important board,” said Governor Quinn. “Access to higher education is a top priority of my administration, and I am confident that these appointments will help continue my mission of ensuring that college is affordable and accessible for Illinois’ students. I thank Don McNeil for his service and commitment to the people of Illinois.”

Hubbard currently serves as the treasurer and chief investment officer of Ernst & Young. Prior to her current position she served as executive director of the Illinois Finance Authority, where she managed the issuance of $23 billion in tax-exempt bond financings. She also managed a $12 billion pension portfolio for the Illinois State Board of Investment.

Hubbard is active in civic and community affairs, and has received the Women of Excellence Award and the 2009 Business Leader of Color award. She sits on the advisory board of Altura Capital, and is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago. Hubbard holds a degree in accounting from Bradley University. She replaces Don McNeil as the commission’s chair.

Miguel Del Valle brings a lifetime of experience to the commission. Del Valle has served as chair of the Illinois P-20 Education Council since 2009. He was the first Latino to serve as City Clerk of Chicago and was also the first Latino elected to the Illinois State Senate, where he served as chair of the education committee. Throughout his career, Del Valle has championed increased transparency in government and worked to make sure every child in Illinois has the opportunity to get an education.
